DENVER – Grand Canyon’s Mariah Montoya and Utah Valley’s Logan Petty have been named the Western Athletic Conference men’s and women’s Cross Country Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 7-13.
Montoya, a freshman from Mesa, Ariz. (Red Mountain HS), helped the Lopes to a second place finish this weekend at the Thunderbird Classic in her hometown. Montoya finished third overall in the 5k race with a time of 18:27.6. As a freshman, Montoya was the leader for the Lopes, earning a new personal record.
Petty, a sophomore from Fruit Heights, Utah (Davis HS, earned his first top finish for the Wolverines after consistently finishing in the top-five throughout the season. Petty placed fourth overall at the Color Country Invitational this weekend in Cedar City, Utah with a time of 20:14.4 in the men’s 6k race. Petty’s time helped the Utah Valley men to a second place finish.
Other Women’s Nominees: Utah Valley… Freshman Makayla Stepp finished first for the Wolverines placing fifth overall with a time of 15:35.2 in the women’s 4k race this weekend at the Color Country Invitational… Texas-Pan American… Freshman Jennifer Zapata finished 10th in the women’s 6k race with a time of 23:31.2 at the UIW Invitational.
Other Men’s Nominees: Grand Canyon… Junior Patrick Hardwick finished thirteenth in the Thunderbird Classic 8k race with a time of 27:05.9.
