PHOENIX - (GCU Media Relations) Grand Canyon jumped out to a 12-0 lead and went on to a 76-52 victory over Western State College at GCU Arena Wednesday.

It was the first win of the season for the Lopes, evening their record at 1-1. Sophomore Cheyenne Hedrington finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Courtney Hayes had 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting and added five steals and Jessica Gajewski added a game-high 18 points, hitting 4-of-7 from three-point range. Western State dropped to 0-3.

Texas-Pan American 86, Texas A&M-Kingsville 36

EDINBURG, Texas - (UTPA Media Relations) The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women’s basketball team jumped out to a 32-4 lead and never looked back in an 86-36 home opening win over the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelias on Wednesday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The 50-point win marks the Broncs’ largest margin of victory since beating Schreiner by 58 (91-33) on Dec. 1, 2007 at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

Arizona State 83, Bakersfield 54

TEMPE, Ariz. - (CSUB Media Relations) Arizona State opened the Wednesday night’s women’s basketball game against Bakersfield on a 16-4 run and never looked back as the Sun Devils defeated the Roadrunners 83-54.

Using full-court man-to-man pressure, ASU forced seven CSUB turnovers in the first six minutes. The closest Bakersfield would get in the first half would be eight (18-10) with just over 13 minutes to go. Arizona State held the Roadrunners to under 31.9% shooting in the first frame (9-29) and would push the lead to 38-23 at halftime.
