SAN ANTONIO – (UTPA Media Relations) The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team beat the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-17, 25-17) on Tuesday at McDermott Convocation Center.
 
Haley Durham led the Broncs (6-20) with 15 kills on .370 hitting. Alisha Watson recorded 13 kills on .323 hitting. Mary Kate Clark led the Broncs with 21 assists while Maisy Munson finished with 18. Krysta Freitas posted a team-high 15 digs.
 
Watson, Kyra Hill and Durham each had kills as the Broncs jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first set. After the Cardinals took an 8-6 lead on a Meaghan Patterson kill, the Broncs scored five of the next six points to go up 11-9 on a Watson kill. The Broncs extended their lead to 13-10 on an ace by Maria Kliefoth, and still led by three at 17-14 on an ace by Macey Singleton. The Cardinals scored the next four points to take the lead. A few serves later, with the set tied at 23, Watson came up with a kill and Briana Shannon served up an ace to put the Broncs up 1-0.
 
The Broncs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set on a block by Hill and Durham, but Dear came up with four kills to power a 9-3 run, putting the Cardinals up 9-6. The Cardinals maintained that lead until a Kliefoth kill tied the set at 17-17. The Cardinals responded with a 7-1 run to reach set point en route to tying the match at 1-1.
 
The Broncs jumped out to a 5-1 third set lead, a run that included aces by Shannon and Durham. The Broncs extended their lead to 14-9 on a kill by Durham, before the Cardinals pulled within 16-13. The Broncs responded with five-straight points to build an eight-point lead en route to taking a 2-1 lead.
 
The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set. After a timeout, Kliefoth came up with back-to-back kills while scoring four-straight points to pull within one. The Broncs tied it for the first time at 10-10 on a Durham kill, the second point of a 4-0 run that saw the Broncs go up 12-10 on a Shannon ace. The Broncs extended their lead to six at 20-14 on a Durham kill en route to completing the win.
