Men's Soccer Bracket Set As WAC Play Concludes

The 2014 WAC Men's Soccer Tournament bracket is set following the conclusion of conference play today.  UNLV earned the top seed while host Seattle U is the number two seed.  Utah Valley completed its inaugural season of men's soccer and earned the number three seed.  UMKC is number four and San Jose State is number five.  Bakersfield grabbed the last spot after a scoreless draw against Seattle U on Sunday afternoon.  The tournament begins on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. PT with UMKC versus San Jose State.  The tournament concludes with the championship match on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. PT.  All games will be available on the WAC Digital Network at wacsports.com/watch.


Houston Baptist 2, Air Force 1

Senior defender Miguel Zapata fired a shot past John Wendt in the 87th minute to give his fellow seniors and the rest of the Huskies a 2-1 victory over Air Force Sunday in the regular season finale at Sorrels Field.

Stefan Lamanna took a team-high four shots for HBU (3-11-2 overall, 2-8-0 WAC), as he scored the first goal of the match. He and Thilo Borgmann each had two shots on goal.


Incarnate Word 3, UMKC 0

The UMKC men's soccer team saw its five-game win streak come to and end on Sunday in the regular season finale, dropping a 3-0 decision to Incarnate Word on the road.

The 'Roos (7-9-2, 5-4-1 WAC) and Cardinals (7-9-1, 6-3-1 WAC) played to a stalemate in the early going with Broc Cramer taking the only good chance. He clanked a shot off the post in the ninth minute from the left side.


UNLV 2, Grand Canyon 1

The UNLV men's soccer team won its first conference championship in 27 years on Sunday afternoon after closing out the WAC regular season with a 2-1 victory at Grand Canyon. With the victory, the Rebels finished league play at 7-2-1, which ties for the second-highest wins in conference play in team history.

In a match which featured a combined 28 shots, there was just one put into the back of the net, handing San José State a 1-0 loss to Utah Valley in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) action at Spartan Soccer Field on Sunday.

The Spartans (6-10-2, 4-4-2 WAC) outshot the Wolverines (9-6-2, 5-3-2 WAC) 10-3 in the first half. However, a through-ball cut through the San José State defense and ended on the feet of Matt Gay who rolled in the game-winner for Utah Valley in the 16th minute.


Seattle U 0, Bakersfield 0 (2OT)

With a place in the WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament on the line, Bakersfield earned what it needed Sunday afternoon as the Roadrunners played Seattle U to a 0-0 tie on the Main Soccer Field. Getting the one point for the performance earned the Roadrunners the sixth and final spot in the league meet.

Coming into the day tied with Air Force (10 points), Bakersfield needed a Falcons loss or tie combined with a win or a tie of their own to advance to the postseason. The ‘Runners saw part one of the plan be completed prior to the start of the 1 p.m. PST match when Houston Baptist defeated Air Force 2-1 in Houston.
