CHICAGO – (GCU Media Relations) The Grand Canyon University men's basketball team pulled out a hard-fought 66-61 win over the University of Illinois at Chicago tonight at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Ill.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Lopes and improved their overall record to 3-4. It was also their first road win of the season. UIC dropped to 2-6 with the loss. GCU will now play 10 of its next 11 games at GCU Arena.
Kervin Smith was a force all night, scoring 12 points with four rebounds in 24 minutes. Ryan Majerle led all scorers with 15 points and pulled down five boards.
Sam Daly started at the point, playing 34 minutes with seven points and seven assists. De'Andre Davis came off the bench and also scored seven points and added four assists. As a team, the Antelopes had a season-best 18 assists.
GCU had seven players finish the night with seven points or more, including Jerome Garrison's 10 points. Garrison also had a team-high seven rebounds.
UC Riverside 59, Bakersfield 58

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – (CSUB Media Relations) The script was similar and the results nearly identical as the CSUB Roadrunners dropped another close game Tuesday night 59-58 to visiting UC Riverside at the Icardo Center. The Highlanders (4-3) never led in the second half until they converted on a missed free throw from Javonte Maynor with 8.8 seconds remaining when Taylor Johns scored on an open dunk in transition to give the Highlanders the one-point win.
It was the second straight loss for CSUB decided in the final minutes after leading the entire second half and the fourth loss for the Roadrunners this season by fewer than five points and their second one-point loss of the year.
Bakersfield was led by Dashawn Richmond’s 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting and 2-of-4 from three-point range. Kevin Mays recorded his team-leading fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Roadrunners shot 44 percent from the field (23-of-52) while the Highlanders, aided by their 61 percent in the second half, were 21-of-45 in the game, good for 47 percent.
