DENVER – New Mexico State junior guard Danesia Williamson has been named Western Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 3-9. This is her first WAC Player of the Week honor of the season and the second of her career.
The San Diego, Calif., posted a pair of career highs in scoring last week to lead the Aggies to a 1-1 record on the week. Williamson opened the week with a career-high 33 points, half of her team’s total output, to go along with five rebounds, three assists and a steal in a nine-point loss to league-leader Idaho. She then eclipsed that career high with 36 points, three assists, two steals and two blocks in a win over reigning WAC champion Seattle U. For the week, Williamson averaged 34.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 block per game, and was 20-of-23 (87 percent) from the free throw line. She entered the week averaging 8.1 points and 10.9 rebounds per game.
Other nominees included: Bakersfield’s Alyssa Shannon finished with 12 points, a career-high nine assists, three rebounds and two steals in a win over Grand Canyon ... Johnna Brown of Grand Canyon averaged 15.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals as the Antelopes went 1-1 on the week ... Idaho’s Stacey Barr averaged 22 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists as the Vandals went 2-0 on the week to remain unbeaten in WAC play ... Kim Nezianya of Kansas City finished with 19 points, 17 rebounds and two assists in a win over Chicago State ... Seattle U’s Sylvia Shephard averaged 17.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals as the Redhawks went 1-1 on the week ... Shawnte’ Goff of Texas-Pan American averaged 16.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 blocks last week.
