Seattle U 2, UC Davis 1

Davis, Calif.-(SU Media Relations) A strong pitching performance from sophomore Connor Moore (West Richland, Wash.) along with timely hitting in the middle innings allowed Seattle University to open the 2014 season with a 2-1 victory over UC Davis Friday afternoon in collegiate baseball action at Dobbins Stadium.

Moore threw a career-high seven innings, not allowing a run and giving up just three hits and a walk. He struck out six Aggie batters, also a career high, as he threw 79 pitches during the outing.

Sacramento State 3, Utah 2

SACRAMENTO, Calif. –(SAC Media Relations) Junior Ty Nichols and the Hornet bullpen allowed just six hits and one walk and sophomore Chris Lewis drove in a pair of runs in the first inning to lead Sacramento State to a season-opening 3-2 win over Utah.

"Its nice to start the season like this going against a Pac-12 opponent," Sacramento State head coach Reggie Christiansen said. "You feel good about the preparation we've had the last five weeks. The goal is to win every series, and winning Friday certainly gives you a better opportunity to do so."

Bakersfield 8, Milwaukee 4

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—(CSUB Media Relations)Bakersfield defeated Milwaukee 8-4 in the season opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Hardt Field.

Junior transfer Logan Trowbridge (Santa Cruz, Calif., College of San Mateo) drove in Oscar Sanay (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) in the bottom of the first for the inaugural Bakersfield run of the 2014 campaign.

Texas-Pan American 3, Texas A&M Corpus Christi 2

EDINBURG –(UTPA Media Relations) Sophomore PSJA alum Bryan Ramirez launched a two-run home run as the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs scored three runs over their final two innings to beat the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 3-2 on opening day at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

New Mexico State 4, Saint Mary's 2

LAS CRUCES, N.M. –(NMSU Media Relations) The New Mexico State baseball team started off the 2014 campaign by defeating St. Mary’s (Calif.), 4-2, Friday night during the opener of a four-game series at Presley Askew Field.

The Aggies would only manage three hits on the night, with no NM State player collecting more than one hit, while the Gaels marked eight hits. But a couple of costly St. Mary’s errors and a timely hit by Aggie senior transfer Kris Koerper gave NM State the victory.

McNeese State 9, Chicago State 3

LAKE CHARLES, La. –(CSU Media Relations) The Chicago State baseball team opened the 2014 season with a 9-3 setback at McNeese State on Friday (Feb. 14) night.

The Cougars opened the scoring with a single run in the first inning. Junior Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) doubled with one out and scored on a single through the left side by junior Chase Matheson (McHenry, Ill./McHenry)

ULM 6, Grand Canyon 3

Monroe, La.-(GCU Media Relations) The Grand Canyon University baseball team today opened their 2014 season, a return of sorts to Division I although as part of a different-look Western Athletic Conference, with a 6-3 loss at Louisiana-Monroe at Warhawk Field in Monroe, La.

The Antelopes outhit the Warhawks, 6-5, four of which came in the fourth inning or later as they looked to make their comeback after ULM jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second inning.

Sam Houston State 5, Northern Colorado 3

HUNTSVILLE, Texas –(UNC Media Relations) In the season opener against a 2013 NCAA Regional participant, the Northern Colorado baseball team stayed close throughout, but eventually dropped a 5-3 decision.

Right-handed pitcher Chris Hammer (Greeley) pitched a terrific game to start his senior campaign, throwing seven innings. He surrendered three earned runs, walking just one and striking out four.

Loyola Marymount 2, Utah Valley 1

LOS ANGELES –(UVU Media Relations) Beau Kallas homered but it was all the Wolverines could muster offensively, falling 2-1 at Loyola Marymount on Friday night in the season opener. Kallas’ home run came with two outs in the seventh and is the first opening-day home run for UVU since Feb. 9, 2006 when Adam Openshaw did it against Southern Utah.

Both teams got strong starts from their respective pitchers. The Wolverines’ Andrew Freter pitched 5.2 innings and suffered a tough-luck loss, allowing just two hits with both runs coming in against him unearned. He allowed just twohits while striking out three in his appearance.
