DENVER – Grand Canyon’s Adrian Legarreta and Texas-Pan American’s Didi Fatchikova have been named the Western Athletic Conference men’s and women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 17-23.
Legarreta, a freshman from Bilbao, Spain, went 4-0 combined in singles and doubles, helping Grand Canyon to a 2-0 weekend. Legarreta earned two wins at No. 3 singles, defeating St. Francis’ Anders Sandberg (6-2, 6-3) and Chicago State’s Uros Pajic (6-1, 6-0). Along with his partner Nicolas Moulin, Legarreta picked up two wins at No. 2 doubles. GCU improved to 4-3 on the season with the two wins.
Fatchikova, a sophomore from Sofia, Bulgaria (7th St. Sedmochislenitsi), was 6-0 combined in singles and doubles over the weekend. Fatchikova picked up three straight-set wins at the No. 1 singles spot with wins over Valparaiso's Kaitlyn Hamel (6-1, 6-0), Chicago State's Kirsa Utech (6-2, 6-1) and South Dakota State's Florencia Magni (6-2, 6-4). Fatchikova and her doubles partner Mariana Ranzahuer are on a four-match win streak in doubles competition and they are 5-2 overall. The Broncs have won four matches in a row, their longest win streak since the 2007-08 season.
