Bakersfield Roadrunners
The Bakersfield women’s track and field team began the season at the Northern Arizona Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Jan. 24-25 ... freshman Marina Emhoff paced her heat of the 400-meter dash, finishing with a time of 58.47, which was good enough for 13th out of a field of 22 ... junior Megan Thompson earned a sixth place finish in the 1000m (3:12.25) ... freshman LaShya Morgan performed well in the mile run, finishing ninth out of 17 runners, with a time of 5:39.26 ... the ‘Runner track and field team competed at the Northridge All Comers meet on Feb. 1, an outdoor meet ... the team is off this week, before competing at the Run for the Dream event in Fresno, Calif., on Feb. 17.
Chicago State Cougars
The Chicago State track and field teams competed at the Illinois Wesleyan Titan Open in Bloomington, Ill. ... the women’s team placed third and the men took fifth ... for the men, sophomore Kory Jackson won the long jump title with a leap of 6.86 meters ... junior DeShaunte Lewis continued his solid indoor season with a third place finish in the 800 meters in a season-best time of 1:57.49 ... on the women’s side, senior Jaya Emerson picked up a win in the shot put with a toss of 12.44 meters ... freshman Zhate Jackson won the 200 meters after recording a time of 25.70 ... sophomore Shaquilla Jackson finished third in the same race thanks to a time of 26.69 ... this week, the Cougars are back in action at the University of Chicago Invite on Saturday.
Grand Canyon ‘Lopes
The Grand Canyon University track and field teams competed at the Ed Jacoby Invitational on Jan.31-Feb.1…. Lance Parker won the 60-meter dash in time of 6.93 seconds and also placed fourth in the 200m (22.09) ... Kevin Lashley and Karlin Stewart took home a first in the long jump and triple jump, respectively ... Stewart’s mark on Saturday is the best in the WAC this season ... Tyler Vandyke set a new school record and finished first in the 3000m with a time of 8:36.56 ... Oliver Smith won the 400m in a time of 48.63 seconds and Stephan Bullard won the 800m in a time of 1:54.74 ... on the women’s side, Shavine Hodges raced to a first-place finish in both the 60m (7.44) and 200m (24.09) ... her times in both events are top in the WAC ... Moya McKenzie won the 400m, recording a time of 55.04 seconds ... this week, the ‘Lopes will head back to Flagstaff, Ariz. for a third and final time to compete in the Mountain T’s Invitational.
Idaho Vandals
Idaho traveled to Pullman, Wash. on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 for the WSU Cougar Indoor ... on the men’s side, Jesse Villines placed third in the prelims of the 60m hurdles with a career-best time of 8.48 ... Arphaxad Carroll’s mark of 23-9.5 (7.25) in the long jump ranks second best in the WAC and 67th in the NCAA so far this season ... for the women, Karlene Hurrel placed second in the 60m with a time of 7.84 and hit a season-best time of 24.69 in the 200m to win the event ... Adara Winder hit a career-best mark in the shot put with her fourth-place heave of 42-0, which ranks fifth best in the WAC so far this season ... this week, the Vandals host two meets ... Idaho hosts the Vandal Indoor on Friday and the Vandal Open on Saturday ... these will be the final two home meets for Idaho before hosting the 2014 WAC Indoor Track Championship.
Kansas City Kangaroos
The Kansas City track and field teams competed at the Kansas State Invitational on Jan. 24 ... the meet was scored as a dual and both teams fell to Kansas State, the men 88-47 and the women 90-48 ... senior Kris Leverette shattered the school record in the men’s weight throw with a distance of 59-11.25 (18.27m), the best mark in the WAC this season ... the victory was his third in four meets in the weight throw ... junior Briana Carter was the winner in the triple jump with a leap of 39-3 (11.96m) and also contributed to the 4x400-meter relay team that earned a second place finish ... both Carter and Leverette were named WAC field Athletes of the Week for Jan. 20-26 ... this week, Kansas City will be off, before returning to competition at the Adidas Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. on Friday.
New Mexico State Aggies
The Aggies are coming off a successful Masked Rider Open competition last weekend, where several Aggies placed in the top five of their respective races ... junior Diana Hawk led the way for the Aggies, earning a first-place finish in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:56.52 ... senior Brianna Cromartie finished first in the 400-meter dash in her first race of the season ... the Aggie freshmen continue to make an immediate impact on the team as Katara Nelson qualified for the semi-finals round in the 55-meter dash ... freshman Savannah Coleman also qualified for the semi-finals round in the 55-meter hurdles and freshman Paige Patterson did well in both the 200-and-400-meter dash ... this week, the Aggies again visit Albuquerque on Friday for the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
Seattle University Redhawks
The Redhawks competed on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at the UW Invitational ... Sophie Curatilo filled the 800 meter leg of the distance medley relay Friday night, helping to set a new school record at 12:08.66 .. she finished second in her section of the 3000m Saturday morning with a time of 9:59.46 ... Curatilo now is fourth on the WAC performance list in the 3000m and continues to lead the conference in the one mile run ... Mandie Maddux put together the second-best pentathlon score in the conference with 3,114 points ... she is also currently tied for second in the WAC in the high jump after her performance over the weekend ... she was named WAC field Athlete of the Week ... Zac Schlachter finishing seventh overall with a time of 22.25 seconds in the 200m ... this week, the Redhawks are off ... SU will be back in action Feb. 14-15 at the Husky Classic.
Texas-Pan American Broncs
The Broncs competed at the Masked Rider Open on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 where they recorded 14 top-10 finishes ... Martin Casse recorded two of the Broncs top-10 finishes after finishing in first in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:27.38 and third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.14, setting program records in both events ... his efforts at the Masked Rider Open earned him WAC track Athlete of the Week ... Jasmine Davison finished in third place in the weight throw with a throw of 16.99m ... it is her second top-three finish in the weight throw this season after finishing third at the Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational in January ... the Broncs are off this week before heading back to Lubbock, Texas for the Red Raider Open on Feb. 14.
Utah Valley Wolverines
Utah Valley University’s men’s and women’s track & field teams fared well at the Mountain States Games hosted by Idaho State, the Wolverines second consecutive meet in Pocatello, Idaho ... in all, UVU managed to win five events at the two-day meet ... Drake Walker’s victories in the 60m and 200m opens, along with Trac Norris ‘and Josh Monsen’s wins in the 1-mile and 3000m, respectively, led the way for the men ... senior Latoya Shaw’s victory in the 60m dash paced the women ... Lauren Hicks had another strong showing in the triple jump as she broke the school record for the fourth time on the season with a leap of 11.68m ... the Wolverines will now be off until Feb. 15 when they’ll travel to Nampa, Idaho, to take part at the Boise State Team Challenge.
