DENVER — Wyoming’s Ryan Nelson and Derek Campbell have been named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for January 27-February 2.
Nelson, a sophomore from Huntington Beach, Calif. (Edison HS), helped Wyoming to a 149-149 tie at UNLV on Saturday. Nelson won all three of his individual events in the meet. He opened up with a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:29.09, the fourth fastest time in the WAC this season. He then won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:48.31 and completed the trifecta with a win in the 500 free (4:34.60).
Campbell, a senior from Laramie, Wyo. (Laramie HS), finished second on the 3-meter with a score of 372.55 at the Air Force Diving Invitational last Friday. It was his second highest total of the season in the event. Campbell battled back in the finals after placing sixth in the preliminaries earlier in the afternoon. On Saturday, he finished eight on the 1-meter board (311.40), before posting a fifth-place finish on the platform with a score of 292.70. His mark in that event was a personal-best and the third-best in school history.
Other swimmers nominated: Air Force junior Ryan Dunne; and North Dakota freshman Noah Lucas.
Other divers nominated: North Dakota senior Rick Eberle.
