CHICAGO STATE
The Cougars only match of the week against Eastern Illinois was postponed ... Chicago State lost twice on the road in its last action, falling to Northern Illinois, 6-1, and IPFW, 7-0 ... junior Sergiu Muresan defeated Axel Lagerlof 4-6, 6-3 (10-2) at No. 1 singles to pick up a point for the Cougars against Northern Illinois ... this week, the Cougars will host a doubleheader against SIUE and Dayton on Saturday.
GRAND CANYON
The Grand Canyon University men’s tennis team was off last weekend ... GCU picked up a win in its first-ever Division I competition on Jan. 25, downing Abilene Christian, 4-3, in Colorado Springs…the Antelopes picked up wins in No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles, and No. 1 and No. 3 doubles…the next day, GCU dropped a 6-1 match to Air Force…the ‘Lopes will be back in action on Feb. 14 when they travel to UC Riverside, and will face Loyola Marymount the following day in Los Angeles.
IDAHO
Idaho suffered its first loss of 2014 when it split a pair of matches with Fresno State and Portland State over the weekend ... the Vandals moved to 3-1 on the season ... Odon Barta won three of his four matches during the week, going 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles ... Barta picked up Idaho’s only point in a 6-1 loss against Fresno State on Saturday, winning a third-set tie break at the No. 2 singles spot ... he moved up in the lineup to the No. 1 singles spot for Sunday’s match at Portland State, where he won in straight sets, helping the Vandals to a 6-1 victory ... this week, Idaho travels to Seattle, Wash. for two matches, facing San Francisco on Saturday and Washington on Sunday.
KANSAS CITY
Kansas City men’s tennis dropped a heartbreaker on Jan. 31 to Creighton, 4-3 ... the ‘Roos led 3-2 with two matches going into third sets, but the Bluejays claimed both of them on the way to the victory ... after losing the doubles point, the ‘Roos came out strong in singles play, getting quick straight set wins by Conner Edwards at No. 6 and Mike Psarros at No. 2, followed shortly by a win at No. 5 by Vinh Pham ... Kansas City will have four matches this week, beginning with a double-header in Des Moines against UW-Green Bay and Drake on Friday, then a home dual against William Jewell on Sunday ... a postponed match from last week at Iowa will then be made up on Tuesday.
NEW MEXICO STATE
New Mexico State went 3-1 over last weekend, finishing with three straight wins after an opening loss ... the Aggies fell 6-1 at UNLV, but recovered to defeat UC Riverside (4-0), Southern Miss (4-1) and Weber State (5-0) ... the Aggies are off this week, before returning to action in Las Cruces against Kansas City on Feb. 14, Northern Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 15 and Idaho on Sunday, Feb. 16.
SEATTLE U
Seattle U swept George Fox, 7-0, in the only match on the weekend, improving to 2-3 on the season ... senior Kevin Lynch won both singles and doubles matches this weekend ... this week, the Redhawks travel to Utah for three matches ... SU opens at Utah State on Friday, then travels to Utah on Saturday, before closing the weekend at Weber State on Sunday.
TEXAS-PAN AMERICAN
The Broncs won both of their matches on Saturday as they hosted Oral Roberts and Prairie View A&M ... UTPA beat the Golden Eagles 4-3 and the Panthers 7-0 ... freshman Juan Cruz Soria recorded his first collegiate career victory after he defeated ORU’s Amar Saletovic in No. 1 singles ... he went on to finish the weekend with a 4-0 record, winning both his singles match and teaming up with senior Chetan Panditi to win both of their doubles matches ... Panditi also finished the weekend with a 4-0 record after winning both of his singles matches ... the Broncs hit the road to face No. 63 Arkansas on Friday and then to SMU on Sunday.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN LAS CRUCES
The 2014 WAC Tennis Tournament will be held April 25-27 in Las Cruces, N.M. The WAC conference championship will be up for grabs, as last year’s champions, Denver, has since departed the WAC.
