DENVER--When the 2013-2014 Academic Year began, the WAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (WAC SAAC) set out to “Shape the Youth of the West” through various community service activities. SAAC programs at each member institution have been required to participate in a minimum of 500 community service hours within their communities this year.
Among these activities was WAC SAAC’s Holiday Toy Drive which was recently featured in the NCAA Division I National SAAC Monthly Newsletter. Following the success of the Holiday Toy Drive, WAC SAAC continues its community service this week during the WAC Basketball Tournament.
This year WAC SAAC will assist with game day operations at the WAC Basketball Tournament as well as host its largest community service event in Las Vegas, Nev. Each WAC SAAC member institution adopted a Boys and Girls Club in the city of Las Vegas. Since November, WAC SAAC student-athletes have been building and cultivating relationships with the Boys & Girls Clubs located in Southern Nevada as part of this year’s “WAC SAAC GIVES BACK” community service event.
During the WAC Basketball Tournament Week, WAC SAAC will be responsible for mentoring, leading community service projects, and organizing educational workshops within their respective Boys and Girls clubs. After initially connecting with the youth via Skype, WAC SAAC members will join the youth at their respective clubs this week.
WAC SAAC will kick off the week on Wednesday by visiting the various Boys & Girls Clubs; WAC SAAC will also host an NCAA Eligibility Seminar for the parents of the Boys & Girls Club members. In addition to attending the WAC Basketball Tournament games, The Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada will attend a Pep Rally on Thursday and a Fan Fest on Friday, both hosted by WAC SAAC.
This group of student-athletes and advisors has really embraced the WAC SAAC Gives Back campaign for the 2013-2014 academic year, “Shaping the Youth of the West.” Follow @WACSAAC on twitter as they continue to make meaningful connections within their communities.
