Chicago State went 0-2 on a weekend trip to Kentucky for two matches from March 7-8 ... the Cougars fell 7-0 to Louisville and 5-2 to Northern Kentucky ... against Northern Kentucky, junior Sergiu Muresan beat Mate Virag 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and junior Luis Ulloa won 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 at No. 5 singles for the Cougars’ two points in the match against Northern Kentucky ... this week, the Cougars travel to Orlando, Fla. for four matches ... CSU faces Palm Beach Atlantic and Penn State Berks on Tuesday, Wisconsin Lutheran on Thursday, and then close with a match on Saturday with a team to be determined.
GRAND CANYON
Grand Canyon went 1-1 in its last action, defeating Montana, 4-3, and then falling at Nevada, 6-1 ... the loss to Nevada snapped a five-match winning streak for the ‘Lopes, but the ‘Lopes 7-5 record is still tops in the WAC ... Ben Collomb has won a team-best seven singles matches (7-3 overall) and has combined with Alexander Roggenkamp to go 8-2 in doubles ... this week, the ‘Lopes travel to face Northern Arizona on Monday.
IDAHO
The Vandals were off last week ... UI went 0-2 in its last action, falling 4-3 at Utah State on Feb. 28 and 7-0 at BYU on March 1 ... Idaho got singles wins from Jose Bendeck at No. 2, Cristobal Ramos Salazar at No. 3 and Cesar Torres at No. 5, but it wasn’t enough for the win against Utah State ... this week, the Vandals are back in action on Monday, travelling to Stockton, Calif. to face Pacific.
KANSAS CITY
Kansas City was off last weekend ... in its last action, UMKC went 0-2 on a trip to Edinburg, Texas, falling to Grand Canyon, 4-1, on Saturday and Texas-Pan American, 4-0, on Sunday ... the ‘Roos won the doubles point against Grand Canyon, claiming wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spot ... this week, Kansas City travels to Wichita, Kan. for three matches, against Lamar on Tuesday, Wichita State on Thursday and Air Force on Friday.
NEW MEXICO STATE
New Mexico State went 0-2 last week during a trip to Texas, falling to UTSA, 4-2, and UT Arlington, 4-0 ... against UTSA, sophomore Liam Goldberg and senior Marc Westgate took the No. 27 doubles team, Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman, to a tiebreaker before falling 8-7 (7-2) at the No. 1 spot ... Patrick Pfister and Naveen Manivannan each won their matches at the fifth and sixth courts against UTSA, respectively ... Pfister easily defeated his Roadrunner opponent 6-0, 6-0, while Manivannan won 6-2, 6-4 at the sixth spot ... this week, the Aggies travel to California for three matches ... the Aggies open at UC Davis on Friday, then travel to Sacramento State on Saturday, before finishing up the weekend set at Santa Clara on Sunday.
SEATTLE U
Seattle U went 1-1 last weekend against Montana State ... the Redhawks won the Saturday match, 4-2, but fell on Sunday, 4-3 ... in the 4-2 win, SU came away with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, earning the doubles point and taking the early 1-0 lead ... the Redhawks earned three more wins at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 singles as Kevin Lynch, Will Topp, and Ian Clare earned wins in their respective matches to clinch the match ... Lynch went 2-0 on the week in singles play, picking up a win at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles ... this week, the Redhawks travel to Reno, Nev. for two matches, facing Nevada on Friday and UMBC on Saturday.
TEXAS-PAN AMERICAN
The Broncs were off last weekend ... UTPA went 1-1 in its last action, falling to Grand Canyon, 4-3, and defeating Kansas City, 4-0 ... freshman Juan Cruz Soria earned the first-ever WAC Tennis Athlete of the Week for the men’s tennis program ... the Broncs snapped their seven-match losing streak after defeating Kansas City 4-0 on March 2 ... UTPA is back in action this week, travelling to face Nicholls State on Friday and Rice on Saturday.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN LAS CRUCES
The 2014 WAC Tennis Tournament will be held April 25-27 in Las Cruces, N.M. The WAC conference championship will be up for grabs, as last year’s champions, Denver, has since departed the WAC.
