DENVER – Seattle U’s Kevin Lynch and Idaho’s Almudena Sanz have been named the Western Athletic Conference men’s and women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week, respectively, for March 3-9.
Lynch, a senior from Colorado Springs, Colo. (Cheyenne Mountain HS), led the Redhawks with two singles victories in as many matches, helping the Redhawks to a 1-1 record in two matches against Montana State. Lynch topped MSU’s Niklas Brandes in No. 1 singles (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) and Javier Martin Morillas at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-4). He also earned one doubles victory with partner Jason Bediones.
Sanz, a senior from Oviedo, Spain, went 3-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles, and was serving for match point in her third doubles match when the match was decided, as the Vandals went 2-1 in the week with a pair of 7-0 victories over Sacred Heart and Hawai’i Pacific. She won all three of her No. 2 singles matches in straight sets, and won both of her doubles matches 8-3. She was leading at No. 1 doubles, 7-2, when Hawai’i clinched the team victory. Sanz has not lost a doubles match since the season opener on Jan. 17, improving to 11-1, and is 9-3 in singles this season, all at the top two spots.
