Idaho 60, Seattle U 57
Trailing by one with 46.8 seconds to play, Stacey Barr drove the lane and hit a layup, drew a foul and hit the ensuing free throw to give the Vandals the lead for good, as Idaho beat the Redhawks 60-57 to win its first-ever WAC regular-season title Saturday at Memorial Gym. With the victory, the Vandals improve to 20-8 overall and 13-1 in WAC play and secure the top seed in the WAC Tournament. Seattle U falls to 13-14 on the season and 8-6 in the WAC with the loss.
The Vandals shot 32 percent from the field, 29 percent from three-point range and 69 percent from the free throw line on the game. Seattle U connected on 38 percent from the floor, 46 percent from downtown and 67 percent from the charity stripe. The Redhawks edged Idaho on the boards, 42-41.
Barr led the Vandals with 14 points, while Christina Salvatore and Ali Forde added 13 each. Alyssa Charlston tallied four blocks, while Forde pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
Alexis Montgomery paced Seattle U with 16 points, while Kacie Sowell posted a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sylvia Shephard added 10 points.
Bakersfield 96, New Mexico State 90
The Roadrunners locked up the No. 2 seed in the WAC Tournament with a 96-90 win over New Mexico State Saturday at the Pan American Center. With the win, Bakersfield improves to 17-10 on the season and 11-4 in WAC play. The Aggies drop to 10-18 overall and 7-8 in the WAC with the defeat.
The 'Runners shot 44 percent from the field, 32 percent from three-point range and 75 percent from the free throw line on the game. NM State connected on 55 percent from the floor, 35 percent from beyond the arc and 75 percent from the line. Bakersfield won the rebounding battle, 40-37.
Tyonna Outland led all players with 34 points, while Melissa Sweat posted a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Dajy Vines added 19 points.
Sasha Weber led a group of five Aggies with 20 points, while Danesia Williamson added 16 and Abby Scott had 15. Brianna Freeman had 13 points and Moriah Mack tallied 12.
Grand Canyon 69, at Chicago State 38
The Antelopes held Chicago State to just 12 points in the first half en route to a 68-38 win over the Cougars Saturday at the Jones Convocation Center. With the win, Grand Canyon improves to 19-8 overall and 8-6 in the WAC. Chicago State falls to 3-24 on the season and 0-14 in WAC play with the loss.
The 'Lopes shot 46 percent from the field, 28 percent from three-point range and 78 percent from the free throw line on the game. The Cougars connected on 27 percent from the floor, 20 percent from downtown and 55 percent from the charity stripe. GCU out-rebounded Chicago State 47-32.
Asha McDonnell led the 'Lopes with 12 points, while Kaitlyn Petersen added 10 points and dished out six assists. Johnna Brown grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, while August Touchard nabbed five steals.
Layne Murphy, Konner Harris and Cailin Nix led the Cougars with eight points each.
Texas-Pan American 55, Utah Valley 46
Down by one, the Broncs used a 14-1 run in the second half to take a 13-point lead and went on to defeat Utah Valley 55-46 at the UTPA Fieldhouse Saturday. With the victory, Texas-Pan American improves to 14-14 on the season and 8-7 in the WAC. The Wolverines fall to 7-21 overall and 4-11 in WAC play.
The Broncs shot 38 percent from the field, 17 percent from three-point range and 77 percent from the free throw line on the game. Utah Valley connected on 33 percent from the floor, 24 percent from beyond the arc and 86 percent from the line. UTPA edged the Wolverines on the boards, 40-35.
Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs with 16 points, while Rickell Preston added 11 points and eight rebounds.
Katie Kuklok paced Utah Valley with 11 points and eight rebounds.
