SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman Brandon Hunley and senior David Del Grande each homered as Sacramento State scored a season high nine runs and opened Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play with a 9-2 win over Northern Colorado on Friday at John Smith Field.
"We've been playing soccer lately, scoring just a couple goals at a time so it was nice to score some runs," head coach Reggie Christiansen said. "The guys came out and were swinging the bats well and we just stuck to our plan and came out on top today. Any way we score runs is good to see, but David got on that ball and Brandon hit his second home run so that was awesome."

CHICAGO –(CSU Media Relations) Chicago State and South Dakota State played 23 innings of baseball on Friday (March 21) with six total runs scored. The Cougars won the opening contest 2-1 in 14 innings and dropped the nightcap 2-1 to the Jackrabbits.
The opener was a pitchers' dual from the start with SDSU starter Adam Bray and CSU starter Ean McNeal (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) each finding success on the mound.

Utah Valley 10, Dallas Baptist 5
DALLAS –(UVU Media Relations) Utah Valley University jumped out to an early lead in taking the opener of a three-game set at Dallas Baptist, 10-5, on Friday at Horner Ballpark. Zach Slesk went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Andrew Freter allowed just two earned runs in six-plus innings of work for the Wolverines (6-15).
“We had a good approach at the plate and had some timely hits early that gave us some confidence,” said head coach Eric Madsen. "Andrew was outanding and pitched really well all night. Dallas Baptist is an excellent team and it’s great for us to get this opening game.”

EDINBURG –(UTPA Media Relations) The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team scored seven runs in the fifth inning en route to taking its Western Athletic Conference opener 9-4 over the New Mexico State University Aggies on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Broncs (11-13, 1-0 WAC) didn't have a hit against Christopher Bradley (1-3) through the first three innings, but sophomore PSJA alum Bryan Ramirez and freshman Victor Garcia Jr. started the fourth with back-to-back double. Three batters later, junior Jesus Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

Bakersfield 4, North Dakota 1
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-(CSUB Media Relations) The Roadrunners took on North Dakota to open the second WAC home stand of the season on Friday night. Bakersfield won by a score of 4-1.
The ‘Runners got on the board early with one run in the first inning. A leadoff walk from Jordie Hein (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) followed by a single to center field by Max Carter (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) put runners on the corners for Oscar Sanay (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS). The shortstop put down a well-placed bunt to the right side that allowed Hein to score on a sacrifice to give Bakersfield a 1-0 lead.

UC Irvine 2, Grand Canyon 0
Irvine, Calif.--(GCU Media Relations)The Grand Canyon University baseball team (10-10, 2-1 WAC) struggled to get going offensively and fell 2-0 to UC Irvine (14-7, 0-0 BWC) in the series opener at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine, Calif. The two teams combined for just six hits in the game as the Antelopes were shutout for the second time this season.
GCU starter Jorge Perez surrendered a run in the first and third innings, but allowed just one baserunner over the next five frames. He was tagged with the 8.0-inning complete game loss (1-5), his third complete game effort of the year. In sum, Perez allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
