SACRAMENTO, Calif. –(SAC Media Relations) Freshman Sam Long threw his second 7-inning shutout of the season and the Hornets struck for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a 10-0 win over Utah Valley in seven innings, with the game called after the top of the 7th inning due to the WAC mercy rule.
The victory was the fourth time this season that Sacramento State (24-14, 12-2 WAC) won a conference game via the mercy rule. It was the second straight shutout for the Hornets against Utah Valley (14-22, 7-7 WAC), which is the first time in the 12-year NCAA Div. I history of the program that it was shut out in consecutive games.

Northern Colorado 8, Grand Canyon 6
GREELEY –(UNC Media Relations) For the first time in a long time, the Bears finally hit together. Northern Colorado Baseball (6-31, 1-12 WAC) snapped its longest losing streak in school history Friday with an 8-6 win against Grand Canyon University (19-17, 8-5 WAC). The win also gave the Bears their first win as a member of the Western Athletic Conference.
Northern Colorado starter Chris Hammer (Greeley) threw a complete game, scattering 10 hits and six runs (three earned) with eight strikeouts and no walks. He improved to 2-7 this season.

Seattle U 9, New Mexico State 3
Las Cruces, N.M.-(SU Media Relations) The Redhawks put together a two-out scoring chance in the second inning, as Brock Carpenter (Milton, Wash.) drew a walk, followed by consecutive singles from Sam Finfer (Bellevue, Wash.) and Cash McGuire (Kent, Wash.). However, Aggie starting pitcher Riley Barr induced a groundout to end the Seattle U threat without any runs scoring.
In the third inning, Seattle U once again started a rally with two outs, as Landon Cray (Chimacum, Wash.) and Brian Olson (Black Diamond, Wash.) both singled. Cullen Hendrickson (Auburn, Wash.) sent a single into center field that drove in Cray, and Olson would score on a New Mexico State error. Carpenter followed with his own single that scored Hendrickson.

New Mexico State 6, Seattle U 5
Las Cruces, N.M. -(NMSU Media Relations) Seattle took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third after a single to centerfield scored a runner from second and a field error by Umphres allowed another run. The Redhawks added one more run in the inning to make it 3-0 after two-and-a-half.
NM State quickly put runners at first and second to begin the bottom of the third, before Paulson hit a triple of the center field wall, scoring both runners, bringing the score to 3-2 with two outs in the inning. The Aggies however were unable to push anymore runs across the plate, as Seattle led 3-2 after three full innings.

Bakersfield 3, Texas-Pan American 2
EDINBURG, Texas-(CSUB Media Relations) For the second consecutive night, Bakersfield (15-21, 8-6 WAC) and Texas-Pan American (16-24, 6-8 WAC) played a one-run ball game, but Friday night saw the Roadrunners take the victory, 3-2 against the Broncs.
UTPA took a 1-0 lead in the second on a Bryan Ramirez RBI double. The Roadrunners tied the score in the top of the third when Max Carter's (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) sacrifice fly plated Nick Vehlewald (Jr., So., Bakersfield, Calif., Garces HS).

Chicago State 10, North Dakota 2
CHICAGO –(CSU Media Relations) Chicago State starting pitcher junior Andrew Wellwerts (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) allowed just two runs in 8.0 innings to help the Cougars to a 10-2 victory over North Dakota at Cougar Stadium on Friday (April 18). The win is Chicago State's first Western Athletic Conference win in program history.
Wellwerts finished with a line of nine hits and two walks while sending six down on strikes. He is now 2-6 on the year.
