TEAM RECAPS
CHICAGO STATE
Chicago State was off last week ... CSU went 2-1 in its last action, sweeping both Western Illinois and Valparaiso 7-0, but falling 7-0 to Marquette ... the Cougars have more home victories than they did all of last season and have surpassed their win total from last year ... the Cougars earned the No. 4 seed in the 2014 WAC Tennis Tournament and will take on No. 5 Kansas City in the first round on Friday ... the winner will move on to face No. 1 Idaho in the semifinals on Saturday.
GRAND CANYON
In it’s last action, Grand Canyon defeated Nevada, 5-1, and Colorado State, 7-0, on a road trip to Reno, Nev. ... the ‘Lopes then fell to No. 74 Idaho, 4-0 ... Frederique Van de Velde had a perfect 3-0 weekend against Nevada and CSU, winning two singles matches ... prior to the loss to Idaho’s Galina Bykova and Rita Bermudez, Van de Velde and Janaki Gunuganti had won 11 straight doubles matches ... the ‘Lopes are off until Thursday, when they travel to Omaha, Neb. to face Abilene Christian and Nebraska-Omaha ... the ‘Lopes are unable to compete in the WAC Tennis Tournament during their Division I transition period.
IDAHO
Idaho went 1-1 last week, picking up a 4-3 win over Oregon on Senior Day and falling 4-3 to Montana ... the Vandals finished the regular season with a 17-5 record, their eighth consecutive winning season and their best winning percentage (.773) on record, dating back to the 1994-95 season ... Almudena Sanz clinched Idaho’s 4-3 win over Oregon on her Senior Day with her three-set, comeback win at No. 2 singles with the match tied 3-3 ... Sanz was down 4-2 in the second set against Oregon’s Jasmine Minor, and later faced a 40-love deficit trailing 6-5 in the match, before rallying to force a third set and eventually clinch the victory for Idaho ... her doubles win against the Ducks was equally as important, as it was a difference-maker for the doubles point for the Vandals, who lost at No. 3 doubles but won the point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 ... the Vandals earned the No. 1 seed in the 2014 WAC Tennis Tournament and will face the winner of the No. 4 Chicago State vs. No. 5 Kansas City in the semifinals on Saturday.
KANSAS CITY
The ‘Roos were off this week ... UMKC went 1-1 in its last action, defeating Cowley College, 6-1, and falling at Missouri, 7-0 ... against Cowley in singles play, Kansas City took straight set wins at the Nos. 1, 3, 4, and 5 slots, from Dimitra Stavrianakou, Mariam Kurasbediani, Raquel Argenal, and Amelie Amsallem ... the ‘Roos earned the No. 5 seed in the 2014 WAC Tennis Tournament and will face No. 4 Chicago State in the first round on Friday ... the winner will move on to face No. 1 Idaho in the semifinals on Saturday.
NEW MEXICO STATE
New Mexico State was off last week ... the Aggies went 2-0 in their last action, highlighted by a 4-3 victory over Idaho ... Susana Alcaraz won both of her singles matches at the No. 2 spot, and along with doubles partner Marie-Pier Thiffault, went 1-1 in doubles ... she earned a two-set win (7-6, 7-5) against Arkansas State’s Janie Nowland to help NM State to its 6-1 win, while she and Thiffault defeated an ASU duo 8-3 at the third court ... Alcaraz also earned a three-set victory (6-7, 6-4, 6-4) in singles at the second court over Idaho’s Almudena Sanz ... the Aggies are the No. 3 seed in the WAC Tennis Tournament and will face No. 6 Seattle U in the first round on Friday ... the winner will advance to face No. 2 Texas-Pan American in the semifinals on Saturday.
SEATTLE U
Seattle U was off last week ... SU fell to Southern Utah, 5-2, in its final match of the regular season ... Sarah Lucas defeated Sarah Lundin in the No. 5 spot, 6-0, 6-0, and Corinne Wurden won at No. 6 by default ... Seattle U’s No. 3 doubles squad of Kelli Woodman and Kristen James also claimed a victory ... Seattle U is the No. 6 seed in the WAC Tennis Tournament and will face No. 3 New Mexico State in the first round on Friday ... the winner will advance to face No. 2 Texas-Pan American in the semifinals on Saturday.
TEXAS-PAN AMERICAN
UTPA was off last week ... the Broncs fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-0, in their final match of the regular season ... the team of Mariana Ranzahuer and Didi Fatchikova led 7-4 at No. 3 doubles but went unfinished once the doubles point was clinched ... the Broncs earned the No. 2 seed in the WAC Tennis Tournament and earned a bye to the semifinals on Saturday, where they will face the winner of No. 3 New Mexico State vs. No. 6 Seattle U.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN LAS CRUCES
The 2014 WAC Tennis Tournament will be held April 25-27 in Las Cruces, N.M. The WAC conference championship will be up for grabs, as last year’s champions, San Jose State, has since departed the WAC.
