WAC Baseball Recaps - April 22

Seattle U 1, #5 Washington 0

BELLEVUE, Wash. –(SU Media Relations) Skyler Genger (Kent, Wash.) and Mac Acker (Redmond, Wash.) combined for a three-hit shutout as Seattle University took advantage of the only defensive mistake made by either team to defeat nationally-ranked Washington, 1-0, Tuesday evening in a non-conference collegiate baseball game at Bannerwood Park.

Genger made the longest pitching appearance of his collegiate career both in terms of innings and pitches, throwing 99 pitches in 7 1/3 innings of work. He gave up three hits and one walk, plus he hit two batters, while striking out five Huskies. In the third inning, Washington put runners on first and third with one out, but Genger induced back-to-back groundouts to third baseman Brock Carpenter (Milton, Wash.) to end the Husky threat.

Utah Valley 12, Utah 8

OREM, Utah –(UVU Media Relations) Utah Valley University outslugged in-state rival Utah, 12-8, in front of a season-high 1,543 fans on a cold and windy Tuesday night at Brent Ballpark. Hitless until the fourth, the Wolverines (16-22) finished the night with 13 hits, getting two hits apiece from five different players.

Craig Brinkerhoff hit a go-ahead two-run home run, his fifth on the season, in a four-run fourth and finished with three RBIs. Zach Slesk had two hits and two runs batted in while Jordy Hart, Mark Krueger and Greyson Bogden were the other UVU players to collect a pair of hits. The Utes (12-24) finished with 12 hits, led by Cody Scaggari’s 4-for-5 evening.

Chicago State 10, Wabash 2

CHICAGO –(CSU Media Relations) Junior Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) had four hits, junior Matt Schmidt (Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) hit a grand slam and junior Aveeno Nasiloski (Hammond, Ind./Gavit) threw five shutout innings to help Chicago State baseball defeat Wabash 10-2 in a non-conference game on Tuesday (April 22) night at Cougar Stadium.

The Cougars broke open the game with an eight spot in the fifth inning. Romanin knocked in two runs on a triple in the frame. Schmidt followed five batters later with a grand slam to right field. The blast was his first home run as a Cougar.

#10 Texas 5, Texas-Pan American 4

AUSTIN –(UTPA Media Relations) The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team built a 4-1 lead over the No. 10 University of Texas Longhorns over the first half of the game, but the Longhorns came back to beat the Broncs 5-4 on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Broncs (17-25) jumped on Longhorns (31-11) starter Lukas Schiraldi right away, loading the bases with nobody out. Senior Alex Howe came up and hit a grounder to second for an RBI-fielder's choice to make it 1-0.

#4 Oregon State 8, Sacramento State 1

SACRAMENTO, Calif. –(SAC Media Relations) Oregon State junior Dylan Davis homered and drove in four runs while also pitching 4.1 scoreless innings to lead No. 4 Oregon State to an 8-1 win on Tuesday at John Smith Field.

Oregon State (28-8) earned a split in the two game series after the Hornets rallied for a 7-6 victory on Monday night at Raley Field. Junior Rhys Hoskins homered for the only run for Sacramento State (25-16), which was playing in front of its largest on-campus crowd of the season with an attendance of 903.

Air Force 11, Northern Colorado 10

COLORADO SPRINGS –(NC Media Relations) In true Northern Colorado vs. Air Force fashion, neither team wants to go down easily, and to stave off defeat, the game plan is to simply hit the cover off the ball.

As was the case in Tuesday's match-up, which saw a combined 27 hits in Air Force's wild 11-10 victory.

Kansas State 13, Bakersfield 0

MANHATTAN, Kan.—(CSUB Media Relations) Max Brown went 3-for-4 with three RBI’s as Kansas State (23-19) handed Bakersfield (16-23) a 13-0 defeat Tuesday night.

Brown’s triple with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second cleared the bases and gave K-State a 3-0 advantage. Carter Yagi would ground out to second to drive in Brown for a four-run lead later in the second.
