Utah Valley Takes Early Lead in WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

OREM, Utah – With day two of the four-day WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the books, host Utah Valley’s men and women top the team standings with 29 and 37 points, respectively, through two events. For the men, Utah Valley leads with 29 points, followed by Idaho with 24 points and Kansas City with 12 points. Grand Canyon is in fourth place with 10 points and Seattle U is in fifth place with three points. On the women’s side, Utah Valley is in the lead with 37 points, and Idaho is in second place with 32 points. Grand Canyon is in third place with three points, New Mexico State and Kansas City are tied for fourth place with two points, and Seattle U follows with one point.

The day began with the conclusion of the women’s heptathlon and men’s decathlon multi-events. Upon completing four of the seven heptathlon events on Wednesday, Utah Valley sophomore Ashli Schulz was in fifth place with 2,665 points. After tying for first place in the long jump with a leap of 5.34 meters (17-06.25) and placing second in the javelin, she won the 800m in 2:26.47 and tallied 4,642 points, including three career-best marks, to capture the heptathlon title. Rounding out the medal stand were fellow Wolverine teammates Ali Shields (4,576 points), and Jessica Lingwall (4,547 points).

For the men, Utah Valley junior Michael McPherson, Wednesday’s leader with 4,092 points after the first five events of the decathlon, held on to his lead to win the event with 7,401 points, posting four career-best marks along the way. Grand Canyon senior Michael Bolligar finished second with 6,422 points, and Idaho’s Drew Thompson placed third with 6,165 points.

For the lone track final of the day, Idaho junior Hannah Kiser repeated as the women’s 10,000m champion, crossing the line in 36:53.96 to capture the title for the second consecutive year. Utah Valley’s Ivie Gonsalves finished second (37:07.83) and Idaho’s Valerie Mitchell took third (38:50.21).

For the men’s 10,000m run, Utah Valley sophomore Jason Lynch took the Wolverine’s second gold of the meet thus far, finishing in 33:33.04. Kansas City’s Dirk Hudson placed second (33:41.73) and Idaho’s Dirk Hudson finished third (33:45.87).

Tomorrow’s field events begin at 9 a.m. (MT) with the women’s hammer throw, while track events start at 1 p.m. (MT) with the women’s 3,000m steeplechase.
