DENVER – Major League Baseball completed its annual first-year players draft on Saturday and a total of seven WAC student-athletes were selected. Bakersfield, Grand Canyon and Sacramento State each had two players selected while Texas-Pan American had one player taken.
Sacramento State first baseman Rhys Hoskins was the first WAC player taken in the draft going to the Philadelphia Phillies in the fifth round with the 142nd overall pick. During the 2014 regular seasonm, Hoskins led the WAC with nine home runs and a .563 slugging percentage while ranking second in runs batted in (45) and doubles (16). He hit .360 with six homers and 32 RBIs in WAC play, driving in more than one run per game in conference play. He was named WAC Player of the Year for his efforts.
