HOUSTON, Texas – (GCU Media Relations) With wins over Prairie View A&M and host Texas Southern, Grand Canyon opened the 2014 women's volleyball season with a pair of wins at the Texas Southern Invitational in Houston, Friday.
The Antelopes started the day with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-21) win over Prairie View and followed with a second 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-16) shutout against the Tigers.

Bakersfield 3, Mississippi State 0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-15)
HUNSTVILLE, Texas – (Bakersfield Media Relations) Bakersfield took a straight sets victory over Mississippi State Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams at the Sam Houston State Invitational.
The Roadrunners took the opening set 25-15 and followed up with a 25-17 second two victory. CSUB closed things out with a 25-15 win over the Bulldogs.
Redshirt freshman Sydney Haynes made her indoor debut by hitting .467 and recording 18 kills. Kelsee Sawyer posted 12 kills and seven digs.

New Mexico State 3, Missouri State 0 (28-26, 25-17, 25-15)
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – (NM State Media Relations) The defending WAC champion Aggie volleyball team struggled during the first set of the season, but found its rhythm and defeated Missouri State in straight sets, 28-26, 25-17, 25-15, on Friday during the first match of the Utah Classic hosted by Utah.
It was a mixture of veterans and newcomers that led the way for NM State. Preseason All-WAC members Bradley Nash and Taylor Livoti each finished the match with a double-double.
Nash led the way with 10 kills and 13 digs, both team highs for the Aggies. Livoti, meanwhile, finished with a team-high 16 assists and added 10 digs.

Seattle U 3, UTEP 0 (28-26, 25-23, 25-17)
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – (SU Media Relations) After losing the season opener to New Mexico 3-0, the Seattle University volleyball team quickly recovered, pulled out a hard fought first set, and then improved as its second match of the day progressed, sweeping UTEP 3-0 Friday at the Lobo Classic at the Johnson Center.
“I was really happy with the effort in the second match, especially because we had to deal with all the emotion of the first match, and no one being happy with that result,” Seattle U head volleyball coach James Finley said. “Our freshman libero Shelby improved from five digs in the early match to 18 this afternoon, Kerry improved her assist average, and Martina made only one attack error against UTEP. In addition, Matea had a great day offensively, and Iris was able to contribute in other ways even though she struggled offensively, something that we will need from our players throughout the season.”

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – (CSU Media Relations) The Chicago State University volleyball team opened its 2014 season here today by earning a split on the first day of the Holiday Inn Classic, hosted by Indiana State, after defeating North Carolina A&T, 3-2, in the first match before dropping a 3-1 decision to Akron.
In the North Carolina A&T contest, the Cougars received a pair of double-doubles from freshman Sarah Metcalfe and junior Elli Woinowsky. Metcalfe produced a match-leading 39 assists, while Woinowsky recorded 10 kills and 10 digs to go along with a match-high six service aces.
Woinowsky paced Chicago State in the Akron match with eight kills and three service aces, while Metcalfe dished out 27 assists and senior Julia Menhart posted a match-leading 20 digs.

Drake 3, Missouri-Kansas City 2 (25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 15-12)
OMAHA, Neb. – (UMKC Media Relations) Senior Melissa Hartsel eclipsed her previous career-high of nine kills by 10, finishing with 19 tallies, while hitting .467 and adding a team-best seven of the ‘Roos' 17 blocks, but it was not enough as the Missouri-Kansas City volleyball team dropped its season opener 3-2 to Drake on Friday afternoon at Sapp Fieldhouse as part of the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Omaha Classic.
Taryn Miller led a quartet of ‘Roos with double figure digs, finishing with 29, while Kaylyn Brandt (career-high 38 assists, 10 digs) and Sydney Crimmins (14 kills, 12 digs, 5 blocks) each notched double-doubles. Hendin, meanwhile, nearly missed with nine kills, 15 digs and four blocks, with Emma Hagedorn adding 13 kills and a team-high seven blocks.

Louisiana-Monroe 3, Texas-Pan American 0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-20)
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – (UTPA) The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the University of Louisiana at Monroe Warhawks 3-0 to open the Sam Houston Invitational on Friday at Johnson Coliseum.
The Broncs (0-1) dropped each of the first two sets 24-26 before falling in the final set to the Warhawks (1-1) 20-25.
Senior Diara Reynolds led the Broncs with a match-high tying 12 kills. Freshman Mary Kate Clark recorded team-highs in assists (29) and digs (14) for the double-double in her first-career match. Junior Haley Durham recorded seven of the Broncs' 14 blocks.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – (UVU Media Relations) The Utah Valley University volleyball team dropped its 2014 season opener in straight sets to No. 22 Kansas Friday afternoon at the Kansas Invitational (25-11, 25-16, 25-18).
Kalani Norris and Macky Treanor led the Wolverines in the contest with eight kills apiece.

No. 23 Creighton 3, Utah Valley 0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-20)
LAWRENCE, Kan. – (UVU Media Relations) The Utah Valley University volleyball team started strong against its second straight ranked opponent on Friday but in the end No. 23 Creighton was too much for the Wolverines to overcome as the ranked Bluejays took the contest in consecutive sets (25-23, 25-14, 25-20).
Macky Treanor paced UVU in the contest with seven kills while the true freshman Madison Wolford led the Wolverines at the net with five block assists. Senior McKenna Tait also had a nice match by recording 21 digs.
