PEORIA, Ill. – (UMKC Media Relations) The Missouri-Kansas City volleyball team claimed the tournament title at the CEFCU Classic, its first title since winning the Radford Tournament in 2011, with a pair of 3-1 victories on Saturday over host Bradley (0-9) and Miami (OH) (5-4) at the Renaissance Coliseum in Peoria, Ill.

With the wins, UMKC improves its record to 7-3, equaling the 2002 squad’s start for the best record through 10 games in school history.

Earning all-tournament honors for the ‘Roos were Sydney Crimmins, Kaylyn Brandt and Taryn Miller, who was named the MVP after tallying 30 digs in each of the three matches, including a new career-high and a Renaissance Coliseum record 38 in the win over the Redhawks

CHICAGO, Ill. – (CSU Media Relations) After snapping a 64-match home losing streak on the first day of the CSU Cougar Classic, the Chicago State volleyball team continued its winning ways after posting a couple of wins today at the Jacoby Dickens Center with a 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-23, 25-13) victory over Mount Mercy and  a 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-15) win over Trinity International.

CSU had four players record 10 or more kills against Mount Mercy and finished the match with a .281 hitting clip that included hitting a blistering .727 (16-0-22) in the fourth set. Leading the way for the Cougars was junior Elli Woinowsky as she produced a double-double with a match-leading 13 kills and 10 digs to go along with a match-best four service aces, while fellow junior Chelsea Sheldon-Medina recorded 11 kills with a hitting percentage of .417 (11-1-24).

Junior Essence Jackson-Jones tallied a pair of match highs in a .438 (10-3-16) hitting percentage and seven blocks (one solo, six assisted), and freshman Sarah Metcalfe dished out a match-best 35 assists. The Cougar defense was also paced by two more double-dogit dig efforts from senior Julia Menhart with 14 digs and junior Milica Zmiric with 11 digs.

Jackson-Jones posted match highs of eight kills and five block assists to pace the Green and White In the Trinity International match. Metcalfe and junior Jana Kunz guided the CSU offense with 18 assists and 13 assists, respectively, and Metcalde also tallied a match-best three service aces. Woinowsky added seven kills and hit .467 (7-0-15) for the match, and Shelton-Medina contributed six kills and three block assists. Zmiric posted a match-best 13 digs for the Cougars.

Grand Canyon 3, UC Riverside 1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-23, 25-19)

(GCU Media Relations) Grand Canyon finished its weekend at the Lumberjack Classic in Flagstaff, Ariz., with a 2-1 record after earning a 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-23, 25-19) victory over UC Riverside (2-7) at Rolle Activity Center Saturday.

Freshman Natalie Tardy, who joined senior Mackenzie Phelps on the all-tournament team, had a team-best 14 kills to lead four players in double figures. Senior Shannon Dugan and sophomore Megan Byrnes had 10 kills each

Sacramento State 3, Bakersfield 1 (18-25, 25-17, 25-10, 25-19)

Bakersfield 3, San Jose State 1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-22)

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – (CSUB Media Relations) Sacramento State defeated the ‘Runners 3-1 in the first match of the day. The Roadrunners defeated the Hornets 25-16 in the first set. Sacramento State returned the favor in set two, defeating the ‘Runners 25-17. The Hornets took the third set 25-10. Sacramento State won the match by taking set No. 4 25-19.

Danika Youngblood and Kelsee Sawyer each charted nine kills as Sac State held CSUB to .147 hitting for the match. Sydney Haynes registered eight kills and three blocks. Mariah Alvidrez posted 24 kills.

Bakersfield defeated San Jose State 3-1 to wrap up tournament play. The Spartans won the opener 25-20 before CSUB rallied for 25-16, 25-16, and 25-22 set victories and break a seven-match losing streak.

Molly O'Hagan hit .500 (17-3-28), had seven blocks, and had five digs. Haynes posted 13 kills and a .480 hitting average (13-1-25). Youngblood (12) and Sawyer (11) also went for double-digit kills. Luiza Martins recorded her third double-double of the year with 50 assists and 10 digs. Alvidrez led the ‘Runners with 14 digs.

No. 9 Brigham Young 3, New Mexico State 0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-21)

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – (NMSU Media Relations) For the second-consecutive day, the New Mexico State volleyball team lost to a top-15 team, this time losing to the ninth-ranked BYU Cougars on Saturday afternoon, 25-16, 25-19, 25-21, during final match of the NM State/UTEP Tournament inside the Pan American Center.

NM State could only muster a .017 hitting percentage as BYU, one of the best blocking teams in the country, finished with 20 total blocks.

Freshman outside hitter Jordan Abalos led the Aggies after finishing with her third double-double of the season with 11 kills while adding 13 digs. Redshirt senior libero Hannah Walker had a match-high 19 digs. Junior setter Taylor Livoti once again led the Aggies with 18 assists while fellow junior Nathalie Castellanos added another 11 assists.

Stephen F. Austin 3, Texas-Pan American 1 (25-21, 26-28, 25-21, 25-21)

RUSTON, La. – (UTPA Media Relations) Junior Haley Durham recorded a career-high 20 kills, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Stephen F. Austin Ladjacks 3-1 at the LA Tech Invitational on Saturday at Thomas Assembly Center.
 
The Broncs (1-8) dropped the first set 21-25, but bounced back to take the second set 28-26. The Broncs then lost the third and fourth sets 21-25.
 
Durham led the Broncs with a .457 hitting percentage to go with four blocks. Redshirt senior Maria Kliefoth had 13 kills on .385 hitting and a match-high five blocks. Sophomore Anjané Janda played errorless volleyball, coming up with 10 kills on 20 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage.

Texas-Pan American 3, New Orleans 1 (25-22, 25-27, 25-20, 26-24)


RUSTON, La. – (UTPA Media Relations) The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team beat the New Orleans Privateers 3-1 to close out the LA Tech Invitational on Saturday at Thomas Assembly Center.
 
The Broncs (2-8) won the first set 25-22. After losing the second set 25-27, the Broncs came back to take the third set 25-20 and the fourth set 26-24.
 
Junior Haley Durham led the Broncs with 15 kills on .345 hitting with three blocks and three aces. Sophomore Alisha Watson had 11 kills with eight digs, two blocks and one ace.

Utah Valley 3, Abilene Christian 1 (25-9, 24-26, 26-24, 25-17)

(UVU Media Relations) Despite dropping the second set to Abilene Christian on Saturday afternoon at the Mean Green Classic in Denton, the Utah Valley University volleyball bounced back to defeat the Wildcats (0-8) in four sets (25-9, 24-26, 26-24, 25-17). The win marked UVU’s (3-7) second of the tournament as it previously swept Jackson State on Friday evening.

Sophomore Macky Treanor led UVU in the contest with a season-high 15 kills and a solid .273 attack percentage while junior Lauren Bakker finished one block shy of a double-double with 11 kills and a match-high nine blocks.

North Texas 3, Utah Valley 1 (25-18, 25-13, 25-27, 25-20)


DENTON, Texas –
(UVU Media Relations) The Utah Valley University volleyball team dropped the Mean Green Classic title match in four sets to host North Texas on Saturday night at the North Texas Volleyball Center (18-25, 13-25, 27-25, 20-25).

 
Sophomore outside hitter Macky Treanor and senior libero McKenna Tait were both named to the Mean Green Classic All-Tournament Team following the match as the two led the Wolverines (3-8) on the weekend and in Saturday evening’s contest. Treanor paced UVU against the Mean Green (9-1) with a team-high 12 kills while Tait led the way from the back row with 13 digs and a pair of aces. For the tournament, Treanor tallied 32 kills and a .241 hitting percentage while Tait put up 40 digs and 11 aces.

UC Davis 3, Seattle U 0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-14)


SEATTLE, Wash. – (SU Media Relations) The Seattle University volleyball team closed out its participation in the 2014 Invitational in Seattle, a tournament it co-hosted with the University of Washington, with a 3-0 loss (25-23, 25-23, 25-14) to the UC Davis Aggies Saturday night at the Connolly Center.

Matea Mamic (Split, Croatia) once again led the Redhawk offense with 11 kills, earning All-Tournament honors for the second time this season. Martina Samadan (Split, Croatia) earned seven kills and three total blocks, while Stephanie Stoll (Bellevue, Wash.) finished the match with four kills and a team-high five total blocks.
