Missouri-Kansas City 3, Florida Atlantic 1 (17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-20)

FORT MYERS, Fla. – (UMKC Media Relations) The Missouri-Kansas City volleyball team (9-3) notched their fifth straight win on Friday afternoon, picking up a 3-1 victory over Florida Atlantic (8-4) in the opener of the FGCU Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites Classic at Alico Arena in Fort Myers, Fla.

Sydney Crimmins led the ‘Roos attack with a team-high 12 kills, hitting .312, while adding three blocks and 15 digs for her sixth double-double of the season, while Skyler Muff hit .233 with 10 kills, five digs and four blocks.

CHICAGO – (GCU Media Relations) Grand Canyon went 2-0 and picked up its first WAC victory at Chicago State Friday. The Antelopes (9-3, 1-0) opened the morning with a 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 15-7) victory over Chicago State and followed it up with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-20) non-conference win over UMass-Lowell, as part of the Chicago State Tournament.

Against Chicago State (5-7, 0-1), seniors Hayleigh Friemoth and Shannon Dugan and sophomore setter Michelle Steagall led the way. Friemoth had 11 kills, 15 digs and three service aces. Dugan had a match-best 14 kills and added 12 digs and three block assists. Steagall recorded the team's third double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs, in four sets. She also added four block assists.

Chicago State was led by Elli Woinowsky and Chinwendu Ngwadom who each tallied 11 kills, and Chelsea Sheldon-Medina added 10 kills. Sarah Metcalfe recorded a double-double of 31 assists and 10 digs, while Julia Menhart prouduced match highs of 19 digs and four service aces. Jana Kunz and Essence Jackson-Jones each posted five blocks for the Cougars.

Against the RedHawks (1-11), GCU hit a season-best .271, led by frosh Natalie Tardy with 13 kills and a .417 average. Byrnes added seven kills and hit .500 without an error. She also led in blocks with six, including two solos. Phelps and Friemoth had 18 and 13 digs, respectively. Hicks added four blocks with two solos.

New Mexico State 3, Rhode Island 0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-16)

DURHAM, N.H. – (NMSU Media Relations) The New Mexico State volleyball team began play at the Holly Young Invitational on Friday afternoon by defeating the Rhode Island Rams in straight sets, 25-16, 25-21, 25-16, during the two teams’ first-ever meeting.

NM State out-hit Rhode Island .240 to .109 and had a season-high 10 service aces on the day. Freshman Jordan Abalos had four of those aces, a personal high and team high for the season, while junior setter Taylor Livoti added three more aces.

Junior outside hitter Bradley Nash led the NM State offensive attack with eight kills and a .412 hitting percentage. Livoti led the way with 18 assists while redshirt senior libero Hannah Walker finished with a match-high 13 digs.

Houston 3, Texas-Pan American 0 (27-25, 25-15, 25-15)

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – (UTPA Media Relations) The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the University of Houston Cougars 3-0 (25-27, 15-25, 15-25) on Friday to open the Islanders Classic at Dugan Wellness Center.
 
Redshirt senior Maria Kliefoth led the Broncs (2-9) with nine kills on .263 hitting. Freshman Mary Kate Clark recorded a match-high 24 assists. Senior Krysta Freitas had a team-high 14 digs. Junior Haley Durham posted a team-high three blocks.

San Jose State 3, Chicago State 1 (17-25, 25-22, 25-17, 26-24)

CHICAGO – (CSU Media Relations) The Chicago State volleyball team battled tough against Mountain West Conference member San Jose State in a 3-1 defeat during their second match of the tournament later in the day.

Elli Woinowsky recorded a double-double of 14 kills and 13 digs to lead the Green and White in the San Jose State match. Essence Jackson-Jones added 11 kills and a match-leading five block assists, while Sarah Metcalfe dished out 23 assists and Julia Menhart finished with 15 digs.

Gonzaga 3, Seattle U 0 (25-12, 25-17, 27-25)

MISSOULA, Mont. – (SU Media Relations) After struggling in the first two sets, Seattle University played much better in the third set, nearly extending the non-conference neutral site volleyball match further, but Gonzaga University was able to hold on for a 3-0 victory (25-12, 25-17, 27-25) Friday night at the University of Montana’s West Auxiliary Gym.

Iris Ivanis led the team with 10 kills, plus she earned six digs and three block assists, while Matea Mamic finished with seven kills and a team-high seven digs. Stephanie Stoll added six kills and four total blocks, the same total of blocks collected by both Abby Blanchard and Alec Goodrie.
Idaho State 3, Utah Valley 0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-22)

OREM, Utah – (UVU Media Relations) Utah Valley University volleyball fell to Idaho State in three tightly contested sets on Friday night at the PE Building (22-25, 24-26, 22-25). The contest marked UVU’s (3-9) 2014 home opener as well as its opening match of the annual La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational.

Macky Treanor paced Utah Valley in the loss with 11 kills while Lauren Bakker added nine kills, four blocks and a .533 hitting percentage. McKenna Tait also recorded a match-high 17 digs while Jen Hardman and Sierra Starley each chipped in 17 assists.

Long Beach State 3, Bakersfield (25-19, 25-22, 11-25, 25-10)

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – (CSUB Media Relations) Hitting proved to be the difference as Long Beach State defeated Bakersfield 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 11-25, 25-10) at the Roadrunner Volleyball Classic Friday night in the Icardo Center. The Beach hit .362 for the match, compared to the .228 of the Roadrunners.

Danika Youngblood registered her second consecutive double-double with a career-high 19 kills and 10 digs to pace the ‘Runners. Kelsee Sawyer had 17 kills while Molly O'Hagan added 10 kills.
