DENVER – Missouri Kansas City’s Airam Castellano and teammate Dimitra Stavrianakou have been named the Western Athletic Conference men’s and women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week, respectively, for January 19-25.
Castellano, a freshman from Gran Canaria, Spain (IES Perez Galdos), played in his first two career duals against Baker and William Jewell, winning both singles and doubles matches in the top flight. He is now 10-1 to start his career in singles play after his season debut last weekend.
Stavrianakou, a junior from Vrilissia, Greece (American College of Greece) also won both of her matches in singles and doubles against Baker and William and Jewell. Stavrianakou recorded impressive 6-0 and 6-1 set scores in her top flight singles matches. Stavrianakou and teammate Maddie Schulte improved their doubles record to 8-3 overall with 6-0 and 6-3 doubles set scores. Her performances helped UMKC women’s tennis start their season at 2-0 for the second straight year.
