PHOENIX – (GCU Media Relations) The Grand Canyon University men's basketball team (9-8) picked up an exciting 71-69 win tonight over visiting UC Riverside (7-7) in its final non-conference matchup of the season. The Antelopes used a strong performance from the charity stripe to secure the victory, their fourth in the past five games.
With the Lopes ahead by two and just 15.3 seconds on the clock, Royce Woolridge drained two free throws to make it a four-point game. UCR answered with two free throws of their own, but missed a three-pointer at the buzzer as the Lopes held on for the win.
DeWayne Russell led the team with 19 points, his eighth straight double-digit game. Woolridge added 18 points, just one point shy of his GCU career-high, while Joshua Braun had 15.
GCU shot 46.5 percent (20-for-43) for the game and made over half of its three-point attempts (7-for-13). The Highlanders went 23-for-66 (34.8 percent) from the floor and were equally as tough from beyond the arc, draining nine three-pointers.
