DENVER -UT Rio Grande Valley's Jose Juan Wells and Utah Valley's Savannah Berry have been named Western Athletic Conference Runners of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 5-11.
Wells, a senior from Cottonwood, Ariz. ran his best race of the season as he finished in third place out of 45 Division I runners at the UIW Invitational. He finished with a time of 24:39.3 in the men's 8K race. Wells finished five seconds ahead of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Edgar Martinez, who finished in fourth.
Berry, a sophomore from Bakersfield, Calif. led the women with a third place finish in the Color Country Invitational in Cedar City, Utah. She ran the 4k with a time of 14:48.3 to help the wolverines to a first place team finish.
Other men's nominees: Utah Valley's Logan Petty led the men across the finish line with a first place finish with a time of 19:20.9 in the 6k race.
Other women's nominees: UTRGV's Jennifer Zapata finished second at the UIW Invitational out of 39 Division I runners after finishing with a career-best time of 22:07.8 in the 6K race. She sat in eighth place at the midway point of the race but rallied to finish in second.
