WAC Soccer Players of the Week
Offensive: Haley Vicente, Fr., F, CSU Bakersfield
Vicente, a freshman forward from Las Vegas, Nev. (Arbor View HS), scored five goals and totaled 10 points in two games. She tied a WAC record for the most goals in a conference game with four vs. Chicago State, doing all of her damage in just 28 minutes of action. The four goals and eight points both tied CSUB all-time school records, and are tied for the top marks in the WAC this season. Vicente had not scored a goal in her career until the first match of the week, but opened her account against UMKC with a goal off a corner kick, and is now second on the ‘Runners in goals scored this season.
Other offensive nominees included: Grand Canyon freshman forward Deseree Doty tied a WAC record for most goals in a conference game with four vs. Chicago State … Missouri-Kansas City freshman forward Reighan Childers assisted on the game-winning goal vs. CSU Bakersfield and scored a goal against Grand Canyon … Seattle U freshman forward Karli White scored six points on the week, highlighted by a two goal, five point effort in the Redhawks' victory over NM State … Utah Valley freshman forward Breanna McCarter scored the game-winning goal against UMKC and added two assists vs. NM State.
Defensive: Kelly Beck, Sr., D, Seattle U
Beck, a senior defender from Tacoma, Wash. (Bellarmine Prep), led the Seattle U backline to its seventh and eighth shutouts of the season. The Redhawks have now recorded six shutouts in their last seven games. Under her leadership, the Redhawks allowed just four shots on goal, and just eight shots total, in two victories on the weekend. Beck also contributed on the offensive end, scoring her first goal of the season in the win over UT Rio Grande Valley. This is Beck's second-consecutive WAC Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Other defensive nominees included: CSU Bakersfield senior goalkeeper Tori Ornela made nine saves in a shutout victory over NM State … Grand Canyon sophomore defender Madison Cox led a backline that allowed just two goals on the weekend as the Lopes went 2-0 … Utah Valley senior goalkeeper Jessica Duffin recorded two shutout wins on the weekend for the Wolverines.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Just a week after the road teams won six-of-eight matches, home teams went 7-1 this week, with the lone loss coming in double-overtime as Missouri-Kansas City topped CSU Bakersfield 3-2.
GOAL-GOAL-GOAL-GOAL
Grand Canyon's Deseree Doty and CSU Bakersfield's Haley Vicente each scored four goals in a match on the weekend, tying the WAC record for goals in a conference match. Both Doty and Vicente are freshman and both came into their record-setting match having only scored one goal prior. Before their explosions, no WAC player had scored more than two goals in any match this season.
CLEAN SHEETS
With a 5-0 win over UTRGV and a 3-0 win over NM State, Seattle U has now recorded six shutouts in their last seven games. The Redhawks haven't been scored on in four-straight matches and have eight total shutouts on the season. SU has not allowed a goal in 407 minutes and 29 seconds, since Sept. 26 at Utah Valley
Utah Valley also put up two shutouts on the weekend against the same squads, topping NM State 4-0 and UTRGV 2-0.
SEATTLE U RANKED SEVENTH IN WEST REGION
Seattle U improved to seventh in the NSCAA West Region rankings following a 5-0 win over UTRGV and a 3-0 win against NM State. The Redhawks have been ranked in the West Region every week but one this season and have moved up in the rankings three weeks in a row.
