DENVER - Texas Rio Grande Valley's Juan Cruz Soria and Seattle U's Michelle Lui have been named Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Month, respectively, for September.
Soria leads the Vaqueros with three singles victories after picking up all his wins at the Rice Invitational. He picked up his wins over Portland's Pierre Garcia, Incarnate Word's Josip Smoljan and Lamar's Nikita Lis. In doubles, Soria teamed with Koby Jansen to go 5-2 in the month of September. The duo made the main draw finals at the Marco & Co. Catering Islander Open as they defeated doubles teams from UTSA and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before falling in the championship match. Soria and Jansen then won three matches in the back draw of Flight A at the Rice Invitational to win the back draw championship.
Lui, The 2014-15 WAC Freshman of the Year picked up where she left off, winning the singles black draw at the Idaho State Invitational. With partner Kelli Woodman, she also won the doubles black draw over the weekend. The sophomore did not lose a match in the month of September.
Chicago State
After finishing with a 1-2 singles record at the Valpo Invitational, Wattley claimed his first tournament title after winning the Flight F single crown at the Purdue Invitational. Wattley captured straight set wins over opponents from Wright State and Dayton while earning tough three set victories Gadacz paced CSU during the month of September with a pair of runner-up finishes and a semifinal appearance in three tournaments. She teamed with junior Hanna Pangestu to capture second place in the Green Flight doubles at the Cougar Invitational before posting a 1-1 record at the end of the month in advancing to the B flight semifinals at Bradley.
Grand Canyon
The men's team had a competitive start to their season at the NMSU Invite. Mitch Maroscher and Adrian Legarreta teamed up for a third-place finish in doubles while Felix Schueller and Alex Roggenkamp placed fifth. In singles, Maroscher advanced to the championship match where he?fell short in a three-set battle for the title. Schueller won the consolation finals in the first flight. Junior Tatum Prudhomme made her way to the consolation final of the first flight where she defeated a player from Arizona Christian. Lana Rinaldi earned a third place finish in the fourth flight. Alexandra Petrzalkova made it to the consolation finals of the second flight, while Susan Baklini and Lana Macukat each made it to the quarterfinals of the third flight.
Missouri-Kansas City
Both the men and women played in individual tournaments.
New Mexico State
The Aggies had a strong showing as they hosted the Aggie invite.
Seattle U
The Redhawks won all four draws (two singles, two doubles) at the Idaho State Invitational, with Michelle Lui and Kristen James winning their re-spective singles flights and Kelli Woodman/Michelle Lui as well as Kristen James/Kailyn Skjonsby winning the doubles flights.
UTRGV
The Vaquero women competed in only one tournament in the month of September after competing at the Marco & Co. Catering Islander Open. The team combined for five wins at the Islander Open with Daria Pensova leading the way winning the back draw championship. The Vaquero men competed in three tournaments in September after competing at the Marco & Co. Catering Islander Open and then took split squads to the Rice Invitational and the St. Mary's Quad. The doubles team of Juan Cruz Soria and Koby Jansen has combined for a 5-2 record so far in the fall season. Soria and Jansen reached the doubles main draw finals at the Marco & Co. Catering Islander Open before falling in the championship match. A week later, they earned the Flight A back draw doubles championship after going 3-1 on the weekend.
WAC Championship
The 2015 WAC Tennis Championship travels to Brownsville, Texas from April 29th to May 1st. This year's championships will be hosted by Texas Rio Grand Valley. The New Mexico State men will look to repeat a WAC title. The Grand Canyon women won the regular season while New Mexico State won the tournament last season.
