WAC Runners of the Week
Missouri-Kansas City's Bryce Miller and Grand Canyon's Kelsi Klotter have been named Western Athletic Conference Runners of the Week, respectively, for the week of Oct. 12-18
Miller, a sophomore from Ashland, Wis. (Ashland HS) led the UMKC men's squad to a seventh place finish in the unseeded race at the Pre-National Invite hosted by Louisville on October 17. Miller placed ninth out of 207 runners with a career-best time in the 8K at 24:14. The time beat his previous record by 53 seconds in which he set last season at the Rim Rock Classic in Lawrence, Kansas.
Klotter, a senior from Eugene, Ore. (Sheldon HS) finished 22nd in the 6k event, leading Grand Canyon for the fourth time this season. Her time of 21:16.4 was nearly thirty seconds faster than her time in the meet last season.
Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon University cross country teams faced strong competition at Santa Clara's Bronco Invitational. The women's squad earned an 11th place finish while the men placed 13th. Senior Kelsi Klotter led the women's team with her 22nd place finish (21:16.4). Redshirt-junior Emily Wilkinson and sophomore Mariah Montoya earned the next two slots finishing 32nd (21:29.0) and 48th (21:47.8), respectively. For the men's team, redshirt-sophomore Samuel Proctor bested his time on the course by over a minute, placing 46th (25:05.3). He was followed by junior Jose Retana who placed 59th (25:30.7) and sophomore Chris Baker who finished 72nd.
Missouri-Kansas City
Ten ‘Roos set personal-records at the Pre-National Invite in Louisville, Kentucky on October 17, including six on the men's team en route to a seventh-place team finish. Bryce Miller (24:14), Nathan Keown (24:41), Quinlan Moll (25:21), Griffin Humphreys (25:28), Jason Fambrough (26:01) and James Barnett (25:42) all set personal bests. For the women, Sarah Fogarty (21:33), Chandler Carreon (21:47) and Tabitha Griffith (22:43) all finished with PR times to lead the women to a 21st place team finish.
Seattle U
Friday, the team competes at the Beaver Classic on Corvallis, Ore. This will be the first time they've left Seattle this season. This meet will help determine the final few spots left on the team for the WAC Championships.
UTRGV
The Vaqueros wrapped up their regular season schedule at the Crimson Classic, hosted by the University of Alabama. The women's team finished in 18th out of 26 teams while the men's team finished in 19th out of 23 teams. Sophomore Jennifer Zapata led the way with a 55th place finish out of 234 runners after finishing with a time of 18:11.42 with senior Jose Juan Wells leading the way for the men's team with a 66th place finish out of 218 runners after posting a time of 25:59.20. The Vaqueros have a week off as they prepare for the Western Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships, hosted by Utah Valley, on October 31.
Utah Valley
The Utah Valley University men's cross country team finished in 35th place in a loaded nationally ranked field at the Pre-National Invitational hosted by Louisville on Saturday Oct. 17, while the women's cross country team finished in seventh place at the esteemed Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara to wrap up their regular season competition. After a week off, the Wolverines will begin postseason competition hosting the WAC Championship meet on Halloween morning in Orem, Utah.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2015 WAC Cross Country Championship travels to Orem, Utah. This year's championships will be hosted by Utah Valley. The Utah Valley men will look to win a third-consecutive WAC title. Seattle U claimed the women's title last season and will be looking to repeat.
