WAC Swimmers of the Week
Grand Canyon's legor Lytvenok and Air Force Academy's Nathanael Zillweger have been named Western Athletic Conference Swimmer and Diver of the week, respectively, for Oct. 19-25.
Lytvenok, a senior from Kryyiy Rig, Ukraine took home five 1
st place times in the meet against Seattle U, leading his team to a first place finish. His time in the 200 IM has a CollegeSwimming.com performance score of 804 and is an NCAA B qualifying time. He currently has the fastest 200 IM time in DI so far this season (from a prior meet). Lytvenok's times in the 100 free (44.70) and 200 back (1:47.12) is currently the fastest in the WAC this season.
Zillweger, a senior from Phoenix (Willow Canyon HS) won both the one-meter and three-meter events in a multi-team meet held at the Academy. The points he earned helped lead the team to wins over conference rival North Dakota, as well as Colorado Mines and Colorado Mesa. He scored 280.10 on the 1-meter and 301.15 on the 3-meter.
Seattle U's Blaise Wittenauer-Lee and North Dakota's Megan Seehusen have been named Western Athletic Conference Swimmer and Diver of the week, respectively, for Oct. 19-25.
Wittenauer-Lee, a junior from Portland, Ore. (Jesuit HS) played a major role in Seattle U posting a 3-1 record over the weekend in Arizona. Friday, she posted the fastest 100 breaststroke split by a second in the 400 medley relay to help the Redhawks finish second overall in 3:56.09. She dominated the two individual events she competed in Friday, winning the 400 individual medley by over 13 seconds with a time of 4:26.90, followed by a 1.66-second victory in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:04.49. Saturday, her 50 breaststroke split of 29.52 seconds was the fastest as Seattle U finished second in the 200 medley relay in 1:48.88. She posted a time of 2:07.18 in the 200 individual medley, finishing second by just 4/10ths of a second. She then helped the Redhawks clinch both dual meets against Grand Canyon and Loyola Marymount by winning the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.28, 3.54 seconds in front of her nearest competitor. Currently she holds the fastest times in the conference in the 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley as well as the second-fastest time in the 100 breaststroke and third-quickest mark in the 200 individual medley.
Seehusen, a freshman from St. Cloud, Minn. (St. Cloud Technical HS) picked up her first collegiate win on the 1-meter board, scoring a 232.45. UND also finished 2-3-4 on the 3-meter board with Seehusen (226.45), Brace (219.15), and Alexis Eissinger (218.50) rounding out the top four.
AIR FORCE
Air Force posted a 3-0 record at a multi-team event held at the Academy, Oct. 24. The Falcons defeated conference rival North Dakota (169.00-118.00), Colorado Mines (178.00-101.00) and Colorado Mesa (174.00-110.00). The points he earned for the team helped lead Air Force to three wins on the day.
CSU BAKERSFIELD
The Roadrunner men took on No. 11 USC on Friday in Los Angeles and fell by a score of 192-95. Lovre Soric and Bryce Timonera led the ‘Runners with strong swims while diver Tyler Greenwald broke 300 points in the 3-meter competition.
GRAND CANYON
The Grand Canyon University women's swimming team faced off against Seattle U and Loyola Marymount in a pair of home meets this weekend. On the first day, they picked up a win over Seattle U 120-84 and a win over 123-79. The competition was stronger on the second day, earning them a second victory over Loyola Marymount (117-82), but a narrow loss to Seattle U (104-100). Both days, the team won the opening relay (400-medley on the first day and 200-medley on the second) and placed runner-up finishes in the final relay. In individual events, they collected six top-finishes on the first day and three on the second. Koens placed first in the 50- and 100-free both days as well as being a member of the squad that won the 200-medley relay. The Grand Canyon men's swimming team squared off against Seattle U for their first home weekend of the season out in Goodyear, Ariz. On the first day's meet, the squad won 136-68 before taking the second meet with a 123-81 victory. On both days of competition, they placed first in seven out of nine individual events as well as first place in both relays. Lytvenok picked up four individual awards, as well as leading off the team that took first in the 400-free relay on the first day of competition.
NORTH DAKOTA
UND men fell to the Falcons, 169-118, falling to 2-1 on the season.
Colin MacQuarrie finished second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.95, out-touching teammate
Cal Mouritsen (48.90) who finished third. The 200-medley relay team of
Nick Lawson,
Ian Ballantyne, MacQuarrie, and Mouritsen finished third (1:37.07). The UND women were defeated, 174-125, to fall to 3-1 on the season.
SEATTLE U
Seattle University men's team lost in consecutive dual meets over Grand Canyon during the weekend, but scored 13 more points in Saturday's meet than in Friday's event. Sophomore Jack Baldoni and freshman Austin Barnard picked up event victories Friday afternoon, with Baldoni finishing first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.25 seconds. Barnard, in his first collegiate race, cruised to victory in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:02.24, over 18 seconds ahead of anybody else in the race. The Redhawks completed a 1-2-3 sweep in the event, with Chris Weinert finishing second in 10:20.83 and Nick Connors touching the wall in third place with a time of 10:22.96. The women improved its dual meet record to 5-1 so far this season with two victories over Loyola Marymount as well as a win over conference foe Grand Canyon as the Redhawks competed on back-to-back days in Arizona. Blaise Wittenauer-Lee picked up two individual victories for the Redhawks, starting with a convincing win in the 400 individual medley, posting a time of 4:26.90, over 13 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Wittenauer-Lee also touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.49, over one-and-a-half seconds faster than her nearest competitor. Madi Lydig picked up Seattle U's other individual win in the meet, cruising to a victory in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:47.03, 5.7 seconds in front of the runner-up.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2015 WAC Swimming and Diving Championship travels to Houston, Texas. The UNLV men's swim team captured the WAC title while the Northern Arizona women's team took the crown at the WAC championships last year.
