CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - The Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) announced on Tuesday that University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's golf head coach Risë Alexander has been named the 2016 Gladys Palmer Meritorious Service Award Recipient.
Alexander will be recognized with the WGCA's most prestigious honor on Tuesday, December 8 at the WGCA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at Planet Hollywood Resort in Las Vegas.
“I am extremely honored to receive the Gladys Palmer Award from the WGCA, an organization I value greatly in developing the careers of women's collegiate golf coaches,†Alexander said. “I have always had a passion for the game of golf and the opportunity that coaching has provided me to give back to the game I love so much. Without a doubt this is an unexpected, but heartwarming, moment in my life.â€
Alexander began her coaching career in 1978 as a part-time volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater, Oregon State. She was the volunteer head coach for Oregon State from 1981-83 before becoming the full-time head coach in 1990 until 2014.
Alexander became the Vaqueros' head coach in September 2014 and is in her second season at the helm of the program.
Throughout her career, Alexander has served as a member of the WGCA as a member of the Awards Committee (1996-99), Second Vice President (1999-2004), Division I Director (2004) and President of the WGCA (2008-10).
Alexander also served on the NCAA Women's Golf Regional Selection Committee for the Far West District from 1995-97 and was instrumental in getting the NCAA Championship to the state of Oregon in 2005 and 2010.
Alexander has been a competitive golfer since 1966 and in total has played in 16 USGA National Championships throughout her career. She played her collegiate golf at Oregon State from 1973-77 and then played several years on the Women's Professional Golf Tour.
The WGCA was founded in 1983 and is a non-profit organization representing women's collegiate golf coaches. The WGCA represents nearly 600 coaches throughout the United States and is dedicated to educating, promoting and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes they represent.
