WAC Swimmers & Divers of the Week
Air Force Academy's Devon Davis and Nathanael Zillweger have been named Western Athletic Conference Swimmer and Diver of the week, respectively, for Nov. 9-Nov. 15.
Davis, a junior from Colorado Springs, Colorado (Air Academy HS) won both the 100 back and 100 fly … Air Force went 1-2-3 in the 100 fly, keyed by his first-place finish, which was the turning point of the match … Also swam the first leg of the 200 medley relay that won with a time of 9:57.08.
Zillweger, a senior from Phoenix (Willow Canyon) won the one-meter and placed second on three-meter in a dual meet vs. Wyoming. The points he earned helped lead Air Force to a close win over long-time rival Wyoming (156-144). Air Force is now ranked in top 25 on the College Swimming Coaches Association of America/TYR national poll.
Northern Arizona's Alina Staffeldt and Chelsea Jackson have been named Western Athletic Conference Swimmer and Diver of the week, respectively, for Nov. 9-Nov. 15.
Staffeldt, a sophomore from Hannover, Germany (Humboldtschule Hannover) posted four individual victories and was a part of one relay victory this past weekend, as NAU defeated Air Force and Northern Colorado and lost to Wyoming in dual meets. In the double dual at Wyoming and versus Air Force on Friday, Staffeldt won the 200 butterfly by nearly three seconds with a time of 2:04.85. She narrowly finished second in the 100 fly with a time of 57.04. Staffeldt immediately got NAU started in a convincing team win over WAC opponent Northern Colorado, swimming the third leg of NAU's 400 medley relay team. She then completed a perfect meet by winning the 200 fly (2:08.78), 100 freestyle (54.34) and 50 fly (26.28).
Jackson, a senior from Flagstaff, Ariz. (Northland Prep) swept the diving events versus Northern Colorado, winning the 1-meter board with a score of 279.98 and posting a season-best score of 270.91 on 3-meter to win that event as well. Jackson, who also finished third on 1-meter versus Air Force and Wyoming, now has three dual meet wins this season.
AIR FORCE
Air Force cracked into the national rankings last week at No. 25 on the College Swimming Coaches Association of America/TYR national poll .… Air Force improved to a perfect 9-0 in dual meets this season with a 156-144 win over long-time rival … Devon Davis won both the 100 back and 100 fly and swam the opening leg of the 200 medley relay that won … In diving, senior Nathanael Zillweger won the 1-meter (296.48) and was second on 3-meter (292.43).Air Force travels to College Station, Texas, for the Art Adamson Invitational, Nov. 19-21.
NORTHERN ARIZONA
The Lumberjacks posted a 2-1 dual record last week, dropping a 181-113 loss to Wyoming, but picking up a 177-123 victory over Air Force and a 214-86 win over Northern Colorado all on the road. In NAU's double dual in Laramie, Wyo. versus Wyoming and Air Force, the Lumberjacks picked up 10 event wins against Air Force and four versus Wyoming. Junior Hayley Edmond won the 200 IM as part of a 1-2-3 finish for NAU in the event, and sophomore Alina Staffeldt posted the overall best time in the 200 fly. NAU then won 14 of 16 events in its dual meet versus WAC foe Northern Colorado, with Staffeldt leading the charge with three event victories. Senior Chelsea Jackson swept both diving boards and senior Kendall Brown and junior Urte Kazakeviciute each posted two swimming wins.
NORTHERN COLORADO
Team defeated Colorado School of Mines (164.5-97.5) and lost to Northern Arizona (214-86) [both at home] Friday and Saturday, respectively.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2015 WAC Swimming and Diving Championship travels to Houston, Texas. The UNLV men's swim team captured the WAC title while the Northern Arizona women's team took the crown at the WAC championships last year.
