KANSAS CITY, Mo. - UT Rio Grande Valley advanced to the semifinals of the 2015 WAC Volleyball Tournament with a sweep (25-21, 25-20, 25-15) of third-seeded Utah Valley Thursday night from Swinney Recreation Center on the UMKC campus.
The Vaqueros were powered by Bojana Mitrovic with a career-high-tying 25 kills on .400 hitting, eight digs and two blocks. The 25 kills are a WAC season high for a three-set match. Haley Durham added 11 kills, four digs, three blocks and two service aces. Dubravka Vukoja dished out 41 assists to go with eight digs and a career-high-tying two aces, while Fatoumata Dacosta had 17 digs, a career-high six assists and one ace.
WAC Freshman of the Year Abby Jensen led the Wolverines with 11 kills on .455 hitting to go with 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
UTRGV claimed the opening set 25-21, scoring the final three points of the set after Utah Valley had cut a 21-14 deficit to 22-21. Durham got off to a quick start with six kills in the opening set.
Mitrovic was the story of the second set, with 12 kills during the frame as the Vaqueros led start to finish.
The Wolverines led 2-1 to start the third set, but Durham came up with a kill and an ace to spark a 7-1 run that put the Vaqueros up 8-3. After the Wolverines pulled within four (6-10), the Vaqueros went on an 11-2 run, capped by a Mitrovic kill, to put the match away.
