GRAND CANYON'S GLAZE NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Grand Canyon senior forward Grandy Glaze has been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 7-13. This is his first-ever WAC Player of the Week honor.
The Toronto, Ontario, native averaged 24.5 points on a blazing 87.5 percent shooting, 5.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game as the Antelopes went 1-1 on the week. In a win over Southern last Tuesday, Glaze scored a career-high 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting. He also grabbed five rebounds and dished out two assists. In an overtime loss to Omaha on Sunday, Glaze re-set his career high with 29 points on 12-of-14 shooting with six rebounds and two steals. It was the third and fourth time that Glaze has shot above 85 percent from the field (with at least eight attempts) this season.
Other nominees included: CSU Bakersfield's Dedrick Basile finished with 20 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in a win at South Dakota ... LaVell Boyd of Missouri-Kansas City averaged 17.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals as the Roos went 1-1 on the week ... NM State's Ian Baker finished with 20 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal in a loss to Wyoming ... William Powell of Seattle U finished with 15 points on 75 percent shooting, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in a loss at UAB ... UT Rio Grande Valley's Shaquille Hines averaged 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals on the week ... Jaden Jackson of Utah Valley averaged 18.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists as the Wolverines went 2-0 on the week.
WAC STAT LEADERS
NM State leads the WAC in scoring defense (65.1), scoring margin (7.8), field goal percentage defense (39.1), rebounding (45.9), rebounding defense (30.3), rebounding margin (15.6), offensive rebounds (14.33) and defensive rebounds (31.56). CSU Bakersfield is tops in blocks (4.53), turnover margin (3.88) and assist-turnover ratio (1.14), while Grand Canyon leads the WAC in scoring (79.8), field goal percentage (47.3) and assists (15.33). Utah Valley is tops in free throw percentage (70.9), three-point field goal percentage defense (30.7) and three-pointers per game (7.5), while Chicago State leads the league in steals (9.36) and Missouri-Kansas City is tops in three-point field goal percentage (37.5).
Individually, NM State's Pascal Siakam leads the WAC in scoring (23.7), rebounding (13.3), blocked shots (2.22), offensive rebounds (4.67), defensive rebounds (8.67) and minutes per game (36.11). Grand Canyon's Grandy Glaze is tops in field goal percentage (62.8), while teammate DeWayne Russell leads the WAC in assists (5.78). CSU Bakersfield's Jaylin Airington is tops in free throw percentage (88.9), while teammates Damiyne Durham and teammate Brent Wrapp lead the WAC in three-pointers per game (4.0) and assist-turnover ratio (2.50), respectively. Chicago State's Kieran Woods leads the league in steals (2.27), while UMKC's LaVell Boyd is tops in three-point field goal percentage (47.1).
UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY'S HINES JOINS 1,000-POINT, 500-REBOUND CLUB
UT Rio Grande Valley senior Shaquille Hines grabbed her 500th career rebound vs. UT-Martin on Dec. 11 to become the 12th player in program history with 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. He is also just the second player in that group to have 60 blocks. Hines has 1,066 points, 516 rebounds and 62 blocks.
UMKC BEATS SEC SCHOOL FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR
Missouri-Kansas City defeated Mississippi State 72-67 on Dec. 12 to pick up a win over an SEC team for the second year in a row (the Roos beat Missouri in the 2014-15 season opener). With the win, UMKC improved to 6-4 on the season to give the Roos six victories at the earliest date (Dec. 12) in the Division I history of the program.
UTAH VALLEY SCORES 100 POINTS AT IDAHO STATE
When it defeated Idaho State 100-76 on Dec. 12, it was the first time that Utah Valley has ever scored 100 points in a regulation road game in team history. It also marks just the sixth time that UVU has hit the century mark in a game. The Wolverines knocked down a season-high 12 three-point field goals against the Bengals - the fifth-most threes ever scored in a single game in UVU history.
