CSU BAKERSFIELD
Only one school in the WAC competed this weekend. The Roadrunner women dominated the Cal Baptist Lancers, who finished in the Top 10 at last year's NCAA Division II National Championships. On Saturday, CSU Bakersfield won 208-92 while winning all but two individual events and taking both relays.
Senior Michaela Paige swam in her first meet of the season and reminded the rest of the WAC why she is force to be reckoned with. The native of Lompoc, Calif. won the 200 free with a time 1:50.16, improving CSUB's previous best time of the season by more than two seconds (1:52.59). Paige went on to win the 500 free (5:00.48) before leading the 400 free relay team to a nine-second victory (3:33.42) with its second-best time of the season. Melissa Gore, a junior from Taft, Calif. near Bakersfield, earned her first victory of the season on Saturday by taking the 3-meter board. Gore's score of 256.88 improved her previous personal best by over three points and moves the junior into ninth in the WAC so far this season.
The Roadrunner men took on a tough Cal Baptist squad, which finished, 10th at last year's NCAA Division II National Championships. Fresh off a big A3 Performance Invitational as well as several of CSUB's top men traveling to the US Winter Nationals, the ‘Runners fell to the Lancers in a tight dual, 158-142. Mihael Vukic excelled, winning two individual events and leading CSUB to a victory in the 400 free relay. The Greenwald brothers split wins on the diving boards on Saturday as well.
Mihael Vukic paced the Roadrunners against Cal Baptist, one of the nation's top men's swimming and diving teams in the NCAA Division II. Vukic won both individual races he was in and led off the 400 free relay team which earned a victory as well. The relay team posted a time of 3:06.53, improving Bakersfield's top time of the season in the event. Brayden Greenwald, a sophomore from Henderson, Nev., competed in his first meet of the season after sitting out the last two months with a hand injury. Greenwald impressed, earning a victory on the 1-meter board with a score of 264.67, good enough to rank in the Top 10 in the WAC. The ‘Runner diver also finished third in the 3-meter competition with a score of 241.88.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2015 WAC Swimming and Diving Championship travels to Houston, Texas. The UNLV men's swim team captured the WAC title while the Northern Arizona women's team took the crown at the WAC championships last year.
