UMKC'S HARRISON NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Missouri-Kansas City junior guard Martez Harrison has been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 30-Dec. 6. This is his first WAC Player of the Week honor of the season and the second of his career.
The Kansas City, Mo., native averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game as the Kangaroos went 1-1 on the week. In a win over UT-Martin last Tuesday, Harrison hit a step-back 18-foot jumper with 13.8 seconds left to put UMKC up by three and seal the victory, which gave the ‘Roos a 4-0 record at home for the first time since 2010. He scored 24 points in that game, his second-highest total of the season, and added five assists and a steal. In a loss at Iowa, Harrison had a team-best 15 points to go along with four assists and three rebounds.
Other nominees included: CSU Bakersfield's Kevin Mays averaged 14.0 points and 9.0 rebounds on the week ... Pascal Siakam of NM State averaged 19.0 points, 17.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks as the Aggies went 1-1 on the week ... Seattle U's Manroop Clair averaged 14.0 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists as the Redhawks went 1-2 on the week ... JJ Thompson of UT Rio Grande Valley averaged 20.3 points, 4.3 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.0 steals as the Vaqueros went 1-2 on the week ... Utah Valley's Marcel Davis averaged 19.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists on the week.
WAC STAT LEADERS
NM State leads the WAC in scoring margin (9.1), field goal percentage defense (38.6), rebounding (46.0), rebounding defense (30.8), rebounding margin (15.2), assists (14.75) and defensive rebounds (32.12). Chicago State is tops in scoring (80.6), steals (10.67), offensive rebounds (14.33)and three-pointers per game (8.33), while CSU Bakersfield leads the WAC in blocks (4.43), turnover margin (4.71) and assist-turnover ratio (1.26). Grand Canyon is tops in field goal percentage (46.9) and three-point field goal percentage defense (30.9), while Missouri-Kansas City leads the WAC in three-point field goal percentage (39.4). Seattle U is tops in scoring defense (64.9) and Utah Valley leads the league in free throw percentage (70.1).
Individually, NM State's Pascal Siakam leads the WAC in scoring (24.9), rebounding (13.1), blocked shots (2.25), offensive rebounds (4.75), defensive rebounds (8.38) and minutes per game (35.88). Utah Valley's Darrious Hamilton is tops in field goal percentage (61.0), while UMKC's Martez Harrison leads the WAC in assists (5.5). Grand Canyon's Joshua Braun and Chicago State's Trayvon Palmer are tops in free throw percentage (87.5), while Chicago State's Kieran Woods leads the league in steals (2.78). UMKC's LaVell Boyd is tops in three-point field goal percentage (51.0), while CSU Bakersfield's Damiyne Durham leads the WAC in three-pointers per game (4.0) and teammate Brent Wrapp is tops in assist-turnover ratio (3.57).
UTRGV'S HINES SCORES 1,000TH CAREER POINT
UT Rio Grande Valley senior Shaquille Hines became the 24th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points when he scored a team-high 22 points at Houston on Nov. 30. He now has 1,035 points. Hines, who ranks fifth all-time at UTRGV with 63 career blocks, also looks to become the 12th player in program history to post 1,000 points and 500 rebounds, as he currently has 499 boards.
NM STATE'S SIAKAM HAS RECORD-SETTING GAME VS. UTEP
NM State sophomore Pascal Siakam posted the 10th 20-20 game in NM State history when he scored 24 points and grabbed 23 rebounds in the Aggies' win over UTEP on Dec. 2. The 23-board performance equaled the seventh-best game in NM State history and was the most for an Aggie since Chris Jackson's 23-rebound game at North Texas on Feb. 1, 2003. It was the most boards by a WAC player since Paul Millsap of Louisiana Tech grabbed 28 against San Jose State on Feb. 15, 2006. It was also the third-best rebounding performance by an Aggie in Las Cruces and the second-best in the history Pan American Center. Sam Lacey grabbed 25 boards against Idaho State on Jan. 4, 1969. Mike Dabich pulled down 24 boards against West Texas A&M on Jan. 31, 1966 when the Aggies played at Las Cruces High School.
CSUB SETS PROGRAM DIVISION I RECORD FOR BLOCKS
In a 72-55 win over Northern Arizona on Dec. 5, CSU Bakersfield blocked nine shots, a program Division I record. Justin Hollins had five blocks in the game, one shy of CSUB's all-time single-game record. The Roadrunners had 17 blocks over two games last week after blocking eight shots at Idaho on Dec. 2.
