WAC Swimmers of the Week
Grand Canyon's Youssef Elkamash and Wyoming's Austin Rettinghouse have been named Western Athletic Conference Swimmer and Diver of the week, respectively, for Nov. 30-Dec. 6.
Elkamash, a junior from Alexandria, Egypt (Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport HS) competed in the USA Swimming AT&T Winter Nationals. Against some of the top swimmers in the country/world, Youssef earned finals appearances in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke events, finishing 10th in the 100 and 16th in the 200. His 100 Breast time had a CollegeSwimmimg.com performance score of 849.0 - the top score in the WAC this week for men. It is an NCAA B Cut and it is the 25th fastest time in DI and the 2nd fastest in the WAC this season. It was also an Egyptian National Record. Elkamash's 200 Breast time had a CollegeSwimmimg.com performance score of 786.0 - the 4th highest score in the WAC this week for men. It is an NCAA B Cut. Youssef is currently ranked 63rd in DI and 3rd in the WAC this season. The junior also swam a 50 Breast Time trial, setting the Egyptian National Record with a time of 28.02(lcm).
Rettinghouse, a sophomore from Worland, Wyo. (Worland HS) had a season best score of 357.61 on way to winning the 3-mtr diving event. He also took second place on the 1-mtr with a score of 309.60 to help Wyoming upset number 14 Utah.
Grand Canyon's Iryna Glavnyk and Northern Arizona's Alexa Geiger have been named Western Athletic Conference Swimmer and Diver of the week, respectively, for Nov. 30-Dec 6.
Glavnyk, a junior from Kiev, Ukraine (All-Republic Higher Specialized School in Physical Education) competed in the USA Swimming AT&T Winter Nationals, a long course meet. Against some of the top swimmers in the country/world, Iryna earned finals appearances in the 100 and 200 Backstroke events, finishing 19th in both events. Her 100 Back time had a CollegeSwimmimg.com performance score of 811.0 - the top score in the WAC this week for women. It is an NCAA B Cut and it is the 58th fastest time in DI and the fastest in the WAC this season. Glavnyk's 200 Back time had a CollegeSwimmimg.com performance score of 789.0 - the 2nd highest score in the WAC this week. It is an NCAA B Cut. Iryna is currently ranked 50th in DI and 1st in the WAC this season.
Geiger, a junior from Fullerton, Calif. (Troy HS) enjoyed a great weekend against WAC foe New Mexico State, winning the 3-meter competition and placing third on 1-meter. Her score of 280.80 on 3-meter was good enough to place first overall in the event. While she did not win the 1-meter event - finishing behind two of her teammates - she did place third with a season-best score of 280.00. Geiger now has four dual meet event wins this season.
NORTHERN ARIZONA
The Lumberjacks defeated New Mexico State, 178-122, in their lone meet of the weekend in a matchup between last season's top two finishing teams at the conference championship. NAU won 12 of the 16 events, including sweeping both diving events and both relay events, on its way to its second straight dual meet victory over a Western Athletic Conference win. Kimmy Richter and Alina Staffeldt both won two individual events.
NORTH DAKOTA
The men finished fifth while the women finished sixth at the Hawkeye Invite in Iowa City, Iowa this weekend.
SEATTLE U
Kaitlyn Overstreet set a school record in the 200 butterfly, highlighting Seattle University's dual meet against Washington State Saturday at the Connolly Center Pool, won by the Cougars 181-80. Overstreet posted a time of 2:04.19, almost a full second quicker than the previous record set by Jane Liggett at the 2014 Western Athletic Conference Championships and over four seconds faster than Overstreet's previous best set earlier this season at Grand Canyon. Three members of the Seattle U men's swim team competed at the U.S. Winter National Championships and Short Course Time Trial last weekend. Thursday, Tanner Schelling competed in the preliminaries of the 50 meter freestyle, finishing in 92nd place in the overall session with a time of 24.15 seconds. Schelling returned to the meet Friday morning for the 100 meter breaststroke, finishing in 47th place in the preliminaries with a time of 1:04.95.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2015 WAC Swimming and Diving Championship travels to Houston, Texas. The UNLV men's swim team captured the WAC title while the Northern Arizona women's team took the crown at the WAC championships last year.
