DENVER – Chicago State's Mario Noboa and New Mexico State’s Ashvarya Shrivistava have been named the Western Athletic Conference men’s and women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week, respectively, for February 9-15.
Noboa, a senior from Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador, went a perfect 3-0 at No. 1 singles for the weekend. Noboa defeated South Dakota State’s Henrique Pereira (7-5, 6-3) on Friday, North Dakota’s Dustin Britton (6-2, 6-3) on Saturday, and Western Illinois’ Chris Bunch (6-1, 6-1) on Sunday. At doubles, teaming with Sergiu Muresan, Mario picked up two wins at No. 1 doubles defeating North Dakota (8-4) and Western Illinois (8-1).
Shrivistava, a senior from Pune, India (Institute of Opening School), finished the week unbeaten in both singles’ and doubles’ play. Against Sam Houston State, Shrivistava defeated the Bearkats’ No. 1 individual Olivia Battye (6-4, 6-7, 6-4). In the No. 1 spot, Shrivistava beat Northern Colorado’s Chrissie Hoolahan in two sets (6-0, 6-2). Shrivistava and fellow India native Rimpleed Kaur garnered two victories during the week. The NM State pairing defeated SHSU’s Maddie Mortimore and Karen Martinez (6-1), and topped UNC’s Lindsey Bennet and Hilary Walters-West (6-4).
