With 22 event titles to be won, not to mention team titles and invididual awards, the final day of the 2015 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at Cadet Field House at the United States Air Force Academy was energetic from the very beginning.
Utah Valley entered the day as the leader in the men's team standings and did not disappoint, using a win in the men's weight throw by McKay Burnett (17.01m/55-9.75) to start pulling away. Cole Eisenhour also earned big points for the Wolverines, winning the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.06. Grand Canyon kept it interesting, earning points in nearly every event to close the gap.
The Lopes pulled within 3.5 points with two events left after taking the top five spots in the 200m dash, earning 33 point but Utah Valley was able to open the gap again, taking second and third in the 3000m run to extend the lead to 20.5 points heading into the 4x400m relay.
From there, the Wolverines cruised to victory, earning their first team title. Utah Valley's Scott Houle was named men's coach of the year. Grand Canyon's Josh Ralston was both the high point winner and outstanding track performer for the men while Utah Valley's Michael McPherson was named outstanding field performer. Grand Canyon's Timothy Ryan was named Freshman of the Year, after placing in three different events.
On the women's side, Grand Canyon was the leader at the start of the day. Missouri-Kansas City closed the gap in the mile and 60m hurdles but a win by GCU's Moya Mckenzie in the 400m dash opened up the lead again for the Lopes.Tope Williams added to the Grand Canyon lead in the 60m dash with a time of 7.49.
Missouri-Kansas City used a strong showing in the women's shot put, led by a first-place finish from Dahlia Dyson with a throw of 13.77m (45-2.25), and the 800m run, led by Veronica Rollins' winning time of 2:18.81, to cut the point lead to just two points with four events remaining.
Heading into the final event, Grand Canyon held a six-point lead over Missouri-Kansas City and with a win in the 4x400m relay, the Lopes secured back-to-back titles with 172 points. Grand Canyon coach Tom Flood was named women's coach of the year. GCU's Moya McKenzie was named both outstanding track athlete and high point champion while Missouri-Kansas City's Dahlia Dyson earned outstanding field athlete honors. GCU's Aaliyah Cook was named outstanding freshman of the year.

The second day of the 2015 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championship began much like the first day ended as Utah Valley's Michael McPherson earned the first men's title of the weekend, winning the heptathlon with 5546 points. Grand Canyon's Vanessa Levy earned the first non-UVU title of the weekend, winning the women's weight toss with a throw of 17.52m (57-5.75).
Grand Canyon earned their second title in the women's long jump as Kevina Godfrey won the event with a jump of 5.90m (19-4.25). The Lopes continued thier winning ways in the women's pole vault, won by Jennifer Rolph with a clearance of 4.01m (13-1.75), and the men's triple jump, won by Jude Olear with a leap of 14.95m (49-0.75).
Seattle U's Shaddye Melu won the men's high jump, clearing 2.11m (6-11) and Missouri-Kansas City's Blake Hocking took the men's shot put title with a throw of 16.70m (54-9.50).
On the track, Friday featured mostly preliminary action with Grand Canyon setting itself up for a good day on Saturday. The Lopes recorded the top preliminary time in four of six men's events and three of six women's events. Missouri-Kansas City also had a good day, recording three top times in prelims.
Friday did feature four track finals as Utah Valley's Jason Lynch won the men's 5000m run and Missouri-Kansas City's Courtney Frerichs won the women's 5000m run. In the distance medley relays, Utah Valley earned the sweep, winning on both the men's and women's side.

Utah Valley owned the first day of competition at the 2015 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championship as Wolverine sophomore Mindy Stapel (WAC Digitial Network Interview) won the pentathlon to earn the first individual title of the weekend. UVU senior Michael McPherson has a nearly 150 point advantage over sophomore teammate Rusty Jones heading into Friday's day two of the heptathlon, beginning at 10 a.m. MT. The rest of the individual events begin on Friday, beginning with the women's eight throw at 12:30 p.m. MT and the men's mile trials at 2 p.m. MT.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 2015 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championship will be held Feb. 26-28 at the U.S. Air Force Academy's Cadet Field House. It will include 14 track and field teams-eight women's and six men's. There will be 34 different events in the competition. A men's team champion and women's team champion will be crowned.
The championship begins Thursday afternoon at 11 a.m. (MT) with the men's heptathlon prelims followed by the women's pentathlon prelims. The first finals events will begin in the evening session on Friday at 5 p.m. (MT), with the 5,000 meters and the distance medley relay.
Championship merchandise will be available for purchase on site. Winning team apparel will be available for purchase at wac.teamfanshop.com following the championship.
