DENVER – Seattle U’s Alisa Poplawski and Missouri-Kansas City’s Briana Carter have been named the Western Athletic Conference women’s track and field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for January 26 – February 1.

Poplawski, a junior from Newcastle, Wash. (Point Loma Nazarene), broke the school record in the 800 meter run Saturday at the UW Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington at its Dempsey Indoor Facility.  Poplawski posted a time of 2:16.89, 21/100ths of a second faster than the previous mark set at the same event two years ago.  She finished sixth in her section of the 800 meter run and is now on top of the WAC performance list in the event by 1.32 seconds. After struggling with injuries during the cross country season, Poplawski is now showing the form that led her to be named track athlete of the year at Point Loma Nazarene in 2014.

Carter, a senior from Warrensburg, Mo. (Warrensburg HS), had a successful weekend at the Jayhawk Classic where she led the Roo’s in the field.  Carter won the triple jump with a leap of 11.98 meters which granted her a spot in the women’s Indoor Top-5-All-Time Performances list for the record books.  Her mark also leads the conference in the triple mark so far this season.

Other Track  Nominees:  Moya McKenzie, Grand Canyon; Diana Hawk, New Mexico State; Ivie Gonsalves, Utah Valley; Veronica Rollins, Missouri-Kansas City.

Other Field Nominees:  Ashli Schulz, Utah Valley; Mandie Maddux, Seattle U; Erika Anderson, Texas-Pan American.
