DENVER – Grand Canyon’s Adrian Legarreta and New Mexico State’s Susana Alcaraz have been named the Western Athletic Conference men’s and women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week, respectively, for March 2-8.
Legarreta, a sophmore from Bilbao, Spain (Centro San Luis), was the sole Lope to win both of his singles matches this weekend. Against UC Riverside, he came from behind to defeat Cooper Bridge in three-sets, while he earned the straight sets victory over UC Irvine’s Shunei Shibahara. He teamed up with Philip Kuehnen to split the doubles matches. They clinched the doubles point with their win over UC Riverside, falling short against UC Irvine.
Alcaraz, a senior from Aguascalientes, Mexico (Northwood University), and doubles’ partner Erika Castillo Lopez have garnered six out of their seven matches, including a 6-1 victory on Sunday over Western Michigan’s 47th nationally-ranked doubles team of Caroline Aleck and Meika Ashby. Alcaraz defeated WMU’s No. 2 individual Olivia Myers, 6-2, 6-2. On Friday against Stephen F. Austin, Alcaraz and Lopez dropped a 6-1 doubles’ match to Malena Gordo and Dhanielly Quevedo before Alcaraz downed Vivienne Kulicke in the No. 2 spot,1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
