DENVER – Bakersfield’s David Metzgar and Grand Canyon’s Andrew Naderer have been named Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 23 – Mar. 1.
Metzgar, a sophomore infielder from Lancaster, Calif. (Paraclete HS), hit .471 on the week to lead Bakersfield to a 3-2 week, including a 3-1 mark at the Phoenix Muni Classic and a win over ninth-ranked Arizona State. He was 8-for-17 from the plate with four RBIs and four runs scored. He also picked up a double in the 7-4 win over Arizona State on Saturday and stole a base in a 6-4 win over Purdue.
Naderer, a junior left-hander from Phoenix (Arcadia HS), went the distance in a 2-1 win over Milwaukee on Friday, allowing just one run on three hits with nine strikeouts in a seven-inning complete game. He is 3-0 in three starts this season as the Lopes number one starter.
Other Hitter of the Week nominees: Texas-Pan American’s Logan Landon hit .500 on the week, including 3-for-4 on Friday against Lamar…Seattle U’s Sheldon Stober posted three straight multi-hit games as the Redhawks swept Farleigh Dickinson…North Dakota’s Jeff Campbell hit. 500 on the week in a four-game series at Washington, including a pair of doubles in the first game on Saturday…Grand Canyon’s Brandon Smith was 5-for-11 from the plate in three games played with three RBIs and a double.
Other Pitcher of the Week nominees: Utah Valley’s Danny Beddes picked up his first win of the season in a 3-1 victory over San Francisco, allowing one run on three walks with seven strikeouts in eight innings pitched…Texas-Pan American’s Blake English recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts with allowing two runs on three hits in a 5-2 win over Lamar…Bakersfield’s Steven Gee went 8.2 innings in a 6-4 win over Gonzaga, striking out a pair to get the win…Seattle U’s Will Dennis had another solid outing for the Redhawks, earning the win in a 6-0 shutout of Farleigh Dickinson, striking out six and walking just one in seven innings pitched.
