DENVER – Texas-Pan American’s Hector Ramirez and New Mexico State’s Ashvarya Shrivistava have been named the Western Athletic Conference men’s and women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week, respectively, for March 16-22.
Ramirez, a junior from Vera Cruz, Mexico (Laredo Community College), went 3-1 in singles last week, while playing all his matches at the No. 2 position. Ramirez recorded a 6-0, 6-2 victory over No. 63 UT Arlington’s Stefan Williams and then followed that with a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-7 victory over No. 8 Texas’ Nick Naumann. He closed out his weekend with a 6-0, 6-3 win over St. Edwards’ Ricardo Pineda for his third straight victory. In doubles, he teamed with Nikola Crevelin to defeat UT Arlington’s Sebastian Ermicioiu and Pablo Colvee at No. 2 doubles.
Shrivistava, a junior from Pune, India (Institute of Open Schooling), won all three singles and doubles matches last weekend. Shrivistava also helped the Aggies begin WAC play 3-0. Against UMKC, Shrivistava defeated Dimitra Stravrianakou, 6-4. On Saturday, Shrivistava claimed a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Chicago State’s Hanna Pangestu. Shrivistava concluded the opening WAC weekend by defeating Michelle Lui of Seattle U, 6-2, 6-7, 10-5. In doubles play, Shrivistava and partner Denise Van Der Ben also claimed three victories in the opening WAC weekend.
