DENVER - Seattle U's Gus Arroyo and Texas-Pan American's Isaac Samuels have been named the Western Athletic Conference men's track and field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for March 30 - April 5.
Arroyo, a junior from Portland, Ore. (Douglas HS), made it three school records for the Redhawks during the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, breaking the 5000 meter run mark with a time of 14:37.94, almost three full seconds quicker than the previous mark set three years ago. He is now atop the WAC performance list in the event by over five seconds.
Samuels, a freshman from Houston, Texas (Cypress Springs HS), posted a third place finish in the shot put at the Victor Lopez Classic with a career-best throw of 15.02 meters, which ranks third in the WAC this season. He followed that with a fourth place finish in the discus throw with a career-best throw of 48.35 meters, which is currently the best in the WAC this season.
