DENVER - Seattle U's Sophie Curatilo and Mandie Maddux have been named the Western Athletic Conference women's track and field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for May 4-10.
Curatilo, a senior from Honolulu, Hawaii (Moanalua HS), won the 1,500-meter run at the Ken Shannon Invitational at the University of Washington last Saturday. She won by more than three seconds with a time of 4:30.02, less than a second and a half off her season-best mark that has her in second place on the WAC performance list.
Maddux, a junior from Gresham, Ore. (Sam Barlow HS), competed in three field events at the Ken Shannon Invitational last weekend. Friday evening, she finished in 10th place in the javelin throw with a mark of 30.68 meters. Saturday, her day started at the high jump pit, where she finished in second place after clearing 1.63 meters. Maddux capped her day by setting the school record in the shot put with a mark of 11.83 meters. Maddux is first on the WAC performance list in the high jump, 10th in the shot put, and 14th in the javelin throw.
