Utah Valley's Men and Women Take Early Lead at WAC OTF Championships

OREM, Utah - With day two of the four-day WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships complete, host Utah Valley's men and women top the team standings with 39 and 33 points, respectively, through two events apiece. For the men, Utah Valley leads with 39 points, followed by Grand Canyon with 13 points and Missouri-Kansas City with 10 points. Seattle U is in fourth place with five points and Texas-Pan American and Bakersfield are tied for fifth place with four points each. On the women's side, Utah Valley is in the lead with 33 points, and Seattle U is in second place with 15 points. Missouri-Kansas City is in third place with 10 points, and Grand Canyon is in fourth place with nine points. Bakersfield and New Mexico State follow in fifth and sixth places with six points and five points, respectively.

After completing five of the ten decathlon events on Wednesday, May 13, Utah Valley senior and defending WAC champion Michael McPherson was leading with 3,942 points. McPherson held on to capture the decathlon title, winning five of the ten events to tally a final score of 7,040 points.

On the women's side, Utah Valley junior Gately Garnett came into today's heptathlon competition with 2,850 points. She held onto her day one lead to win the event with 4,779 points.

In the lone track event finals of the day, Utah Valley junior Jason Lynch repeated as the men's 10,000-meter run champion, crossing the line in 30:45.01 to win the event for the second consecutive year. Seattle U junior Elena Smith captured the women's title with a time of 38:03.67.

Tomorrow's field events begin at 9 a.m. (MT) with the men's hammer throw, while track events start at 1 p.m. (MT) with the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
