Utah Valley's Men and Women Retain the Lead at WAC OTF Championships

OREM, Utah - With day three of the four-day WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships complete, host Utah Valley's men and women retain their leads with 84.50 and 57 points, respectively, through eight events for the men and six for the women. For the men, Utah Valley leads with 84.50 points, followed by Grand Canyon with 74 points and Texas-Pan American with 50 points. Missouri-Kansas City is in fourth place with 40 points, and Seattle U is in fifth with 31.50 points. Bakersfield and Chicago State round out the men's sixth and seventh places with 20 and 8 points, respectively.

On the women's side, Utah Valley is in the lead with 57 points, followed closely by Missouri-Kansas City with 56 points. Grand Canyon is in third place with 41 points, New Mexico State is in fourth with 30 and Seattle U is in fifth place with 20 points. Texas-Pan American (15), Bakersfield (12) and Chicago State (3) are in places six through eight.

With unseasonably cool temperatures and scattered rain showers, day three saw a WAC Championship record broken in the women's steeplechase. Missouri-Kansas City junior Courtney Frerichs posted a time of 10:15.41 to break the WAC meet record in the event. Frerichs also owns the WAC all-time record of 9:32.12, set earlier this month. Fellow Kangaroo Bryce Miller took home the gold in the men's 3000m steeplechase, finishing with a time of 9:15.90.

The day's field events began with the men's hammer throw. Bakersfield senior Bryan Wilmert repeated as WAC champion with a toss of 57.78 meters to take gold in the event. Grand Canyon sophomore Marcus Flannigan took home the men's long jump title, and the Lopes' Brianne Key captured the women's long jump crown.

New Mexico State freshman Kayli Farmer won the women's javelin with a throw of 42.87m, and Missouri-Kansas City junior Dalia Dyson brought home the women's shot put title with a toss of 14.28m.

The men's pole vault title came down to number of attempts, as Utah Valley senior Michael Ashton cleared a height of 4.71m on his second attempt, beating out Grand Canyon's Austin Tilley for the gold.

Texas-Pan American freshman Isaac Samuels took the men's discus title with a throw of 49.03m, and in the last field event of the day, Seattle U junior Shaddye Melu cleared a height of 2.12m to edge out last year's champion, UVU's Scott Moake, for the men's high jump top spot.

Tomorrow's field events begin at 9 a.m. (MT) with the women's hammer throw, while track events start at 2:30 p.m. (MT) with the men's 4x100-meter relay.
