WAC Schools Well Represented in MLB Draft 6/10/2015 12:00:00 AM DENVER - Major League Baseball concluded its annual First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday and a number of WAC student-athletes heard their names announced. A total of 16 players from nine WAC schools were selected, more than double the number of WAC players selected in 2014. Sacramento State's Nathan Lukes was the first WAC player taken as the outfielder was selected in the seventh round by the Cleveland Indians with the 214th overall pick. Lukes is the Hornets' all-time hits leader with 244 hits over three seasons in Sacramento. This season, he hit .345 with 14 doubles and 38 RBIs. The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Texas-Pan American's Logan Landon in one of the final picks on Tuesday. The Second Team All-WAC selection hit .382 this season, third best in the conference and 19th best in the NCAA. He also posted a WAC-best .476 on-base percentage in his first year as a position player for the Broncs after pitching out of the bullpen for UTPA as a junior. Day three began with CSU Bakersfield's Mylz Jones selected by the Colorado Rockies with the second pick of the 13th round. Grand Canyon's Chad De La Guerra went to the Boston Red Sox in the 17th round and Seattle U's Landon Cray was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 18th round. The WAC's all-time saves leader went in the 22nd round as Sacramento State's Sutter McLoughlin was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies. Seattle U picked up its second selection of the day in the 23rd round as the Baltimore Orioles selected Will Dennis with the 703rd overall pick. The Colorado Rockies selected another WAC shortstop in the 25th round, choosing Sacramento State's Scotty Burcham with the 737th pick. The Hornets had their fourth player drafted one round later as the St. Louis Cardinals selected Brennan Leitao with the 791st selection. North Dakota saw its first selection in the 28th round as Tyler Follis was selected by the Colorado Rockies, the third WAC shortstop selected by the NL West club. Grand Canyon had its second player taken in the 31st round as the Chicago White Sox selected David Walker. 2015 WAC Player of the Year Jensen Park of Northern Colorado was selected in the 32nd round by Colorado. The Minnesota Twins selected Seattle U catcher Brian Olson in the 34th round, giving the Redhawks three players selected on Wednesday. NM State outfielder Quinnton Mack was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the first pick of the 35th round, making the Aggies the eighth WAC team with a player selected. Grand Canyon pitcher Andrew Naderer became the 15th WAC player drafted as the Detroit Tigers took the left-hander in the 37th round.
