WAC Soccer Players of the week
Offensive: Sabrina Delgado, Fr., MF, CSU Bakersfield
Delgado, a freshman midfielder from Hacienda Heights, Calif. (Los Altos HS), scored twice in two matches for the ‘Runners. Delgado scored her first collegiate goal with a 48th-minute equalizer on Friday against Colorado College. The freshman followed up her performance by scoring the game-winning goal against Air Force on Sunday, capping a comeback win. She has taken just six shots this year, half of which were on goal and one-third of which were goals, showing the midfielder's timeliness. Delgado is a workhorse for CSUB, as she is second on the team in minutes for field players (672 minutes) and has played all 90 minutes in four of the last five matches.
Other offensive nominees included: Chicago State's sophomore forward Jyllian Coggins scored against Eastern Illinois ... Missouri-Kansas City's freshman forward Lexi Howard scored the game-winning goal in overtime as UMKC defeated Eastern Illinois …. UT Rio Grande Valley's sophomore midfielder Zinnia Hannig scored the Vaqueros' lone goal of the weekend against UNLV … Utah Valley's senior forward Kali Stubbs scored the game-winning goal with just 28 seconds remaining in the Wolverines' victory over Portland State.
Defensive: Jessica Duffin, Sr., GK, Utah Valley
Duffin, a senior from Smithfield, Utah (Skyview HS), became the all-time career shutouts leader at Utah Valley with a 1-0 shutout win over Portland State on Sunday. Duffin passes Lauren Sack (11) for the top spot, tallying 12 career clean sheets. Duffin also posted six saves in Sunday's win over PSU. On the week, Duffin registered 10 saves, one goal allowed, and one shutout.
CSU Bakersfield's senior goalkeeper Tori Ornela made 15 saves in two matches as CSUB went 1-1 … Chicago State's freshman goalkeeper Audra Wisehart made a WAC season-best 17 saves against Indiana State … UT Rio Grande Valley's junior goalkeeper Maria Eriksen allowed her first goal of the season vs. Texas Southern, after 289:14 of scoreless action.
CONFERENCE PLAY BEGINS THIS
Following CSU Bakersfield's midweek, non-conference tilt against UC Santa Barbara, play will transition to WAC play for the rest of the season. The schedule will be a double round-robin within each division and a single round-robin against the other division for a total of 10 matches.
The top six eligible teams meet in Bakersfield, Calif. for the single-elimination tournament, with the top two seeds receiving first round byes.
SEATTLE U RANKED 27TH IN FIRST NCAA RPI RANKING
Seattle U debuted at No. 27 in the first NCAA RPI rankings that were released on Sept. 21. The Redhawks 5-2-1 record includes wins against opponents from the Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC and West Coast Conference.
SEATTLE U RANKED EIGHTH IN WEST REGION
Seattle U moved up to eighth in the NSCAA West Region rankings following a 0-0 tie against Idaho on the weekend. The Redhawks have been ranked in the West Region every week but one this season.
DUFFIN SETS UTAH VALLEY CAREER SHUTOUT RECORD
Jessica Duffin became the all-time career shutouts leader at Utah Valley with a 1-0 shutout win over Portland State on Sunday. Duffin passes Lauren Sack (11) for the top spot, tallying 12 career clean sheets.
UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY SHUTOUT STREAK SNAPPED
A Texas Southern goal with 45 seconds left against UTRGV snapped a program record 327:20 shutout streak. The streak started with the final 29:58 of the match at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9/6), extended through back-to-back shutouts of South Dakota (97:08) and Houston Baptist (110:00) and ended after 89:14 in the match. The previous record was 275:14, from 9/14/which started with the final 27:27 at Incarnate Word (9/14/14) before extending through back-to-back shutouts of Texas Southern (110:00) and Our Lady of the Lake (90:00) and ending after 48:14 against New Mexico State (9/27/14).
KEEPING BUSY
Chicago State freshman goalkeeper Audra Wisehart made 17 saves in the Cougars loss to Indiana State, the second-most ever recorded in WAC history. The WAC record is 18 saves, set by Hawai'i's Demarre Sanchez in 2000 against SMU.
SHOOTING GALLERY
Missouri-Kansas City took a school record 41 shots against Eastern Illinois in last Friday's match, but were only able to muster one goal, which didn't come until overtime, in the 1-0 win.
WORKING OVERTIME
UT Rio Grande Valley went to overtime in five of its first seven matches this season. The Vaqueros are 1-1-3 in those matches and have played an extra 84 minutes, 27 seconds of soccer so far on the season, almost an entire extra regulation contest.
ROAD WARRIORS
Seattle U is in the midst of a stretch of seven-straight matches away from home. SU, which played its first four matches of the season in Seattle (three home matches, one at Washington) will not play another home match until Oct. 9. The Redhawks are 3-0-1 during the trip. The reigning champs open conference play with three road matches, beginning this Saturday at Utah Valley.
NCAA OPPONENTS
WAC teams will play in 12 matches against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last year. Six of the matches will be played at WAC home sites with Missouri-Kansas City hosting two and NM State, Seattle U, UTRGV and Utah Valley each hosting one. Missouri-Kansas City leads all teams with three matches against postseason participants, followed by two each for Grand Canyon, Seattle U and UTRGV. Chicago State, NM State and Utah Valley will each play one.
